「政治獻媚」︰ Political toadyism！
首先，因為本欄另一作者曾鈺成說，既然可以講This is clearly rubbish， 所以This iscompletely rubbish 一樣正確。這個講法，似乎亂了許多同學的腦，我收到許多查詢。
答︰上述的clearly，是用來modify 前面的is 的。舉另一例子思考一下，this is a sure win可以變成this is a surely win？Sure thing 可改說surely thing？就是不對頭。
所有語文都經過歷史的浸淫，世代相傳，有時候因利乘便，往往約定俗成；語文不是科學，縱有文法公式，卻有許多1+1 不等於2 的例外。這complete rubbish 一筆，年輕人可以不理，不要給嚇怕，只要多聽多讀多講，學習常人常話就好。
回說今日要談的「獻媚」一詞︰這個夏天，一條牽涉教育界的大新聞是，北京政要訪港，香港大學管理層涉嫌向之「政治獻媚」，用英文講可叫political toadyism。
Toad 原本指有毒的蛙，會為老闆吃毒蛙的人，護主情切得交關，就是個toady，這個字做名詞及動詞都得。
He is such a toady. He will do anything forhis boss. 他精於獻媚（口語即「一等一的擦鞋仔」），會為老闆做任何事。
They are trying hard to toady up to thevisiting guest. 他們花盡心思要討好來訪的客人。
Toadyism，獻媚主義、擦鞋現象。擦鞋，可不可以直譯shoe-shining？可以，那是本地西人的常用語，即使出了香港，根據上文下理都會聽得懂，不必擔心有人笑你講Chinglish。
That official is nothing but a shoeshine boy.那個官員是個不折不扣的擦鞋仔。
英文原裝的話， 不說鞋， 講靴， 話人boot-licking（舐靴）。
That politician is nothing but a bootlicker. 那個政治人是如假包換的馬屁精。
馬屁一類字眼，略嫌粗俗；更粗俗但要知的， 是英文口語的ass-licking， 亦作arse-licking， 解「舐屁股」， 名詞是ass-licker。
If he keeps giving the boss ass-licking atthe rate he’s currently doing, he should be firstin line for promotion. 以他不住擦老闆鞋的進度，下一輪的擢升該第一個輪到他。
獻媚可解阿諛奉迎、卑躬失節、哈巴叩頭、吹捧擦鞋，總之關節缺鈣，甚有公公見太后的模樣，英文也一樣有五花八門的類同講法。這星期篇幅不夠，不日再談。
