與人談話討論,有時候會想把內容講得輕巧一些,不要聽起來像實牙實齒攬了上身,就是不想負責,我們口語會說「聽講話……」。意思是「我也不過聽番來,也許/ 應該是真的,但若是假的,也不要怪在我頭上」。英文有沒有這款西式的「明哲保身」?有。
當然,這副腔調,有時候確是因為對事件實在弄不清楚,真的只是聽回來,並無「詐詐諦諦」的意圖。視乎上文下理,英文一樣有相同的表達。主要有兩個選擇:
1. Word has it that…: Word has it thathe is about to lose his job. (聽講話他就快會丟了份工。)
2. Rumour has it that…:Rumour has itthat they may separate. (聽講話他們或會分開、分居。)
當中的that,可有可無。既然兩句都解「聽講話」,那用word 和rumour ,也沒分別吧?仍有一點。Word 這個字,無愛無恨,聽上去中立得很;但rumour直指「謠言」,那個可信度自然較低,相對地,那個「唔關我事、並非我講」的意味也就強了。
Word has it that = To refer to somethingthat is generally thought to be true. 用來指出未必真確、但一般人都頗相信的事。
Rumour has it that = A moreconvenient way of expressing an opinion,stressing more you are not the only onewho thinks so. 表達想法時比較方便、亦即「卸膊」的用語; 「江湖傳聞如是說咋」。Word/Rumour has it that he is arapist. 聽說他是個強姦犯。要否定上面這句話,可答”It is just a rumour”,但就不可以答”It is just a word”。
或問, 為什麼不就說Word says,Rumour says, 而要講has it? 這是習用,沒得解釋,只能強記。同時要記得,這個用法的word 和rumour 都是單數。不講Words have it、也少聽Rumours have it。事實是,word 這個字,常常以單數出現:.You have my word. 你有我的保證。.She has kept her word. 她守了承諾。.That is not a man of his word. 這個男人信不過。
.She always wants the last word. (在辯論或爭吵中)她總要說最後一句話、提出最後一點。
.The boss has the final word on this. 老闆對此有最後決定權。
.It is your word against his. 是你的話相對他的話罷了;亦即「你有你講,佢有佢講」。
