七十高齡
五十多歲時的維珍尼亞．吳爾芙說： 「Are we as old as that？I feel like six！」我們真的有這麼老？我感到只有六歲！
本人今年七十歲，感覺像與我同月同日出生的吳爾芙一樣：莫名其妙。很努力試探七十高齡要感到怎麼才適當，但不成功。認老不認老不是問題，曾任公職的人，年齡是公共檔案。問題是我對年齡數字無觸覺，從來不知道別人的歲數，知道也記不住，對自己亦然。
但我對時光飛逝卻十分敏感，時刻好像時間的巨輪滾動，在耳邊隆隆作響。手頭這樣那樣事情還未做好，但時間已不留情地向前了。每一樣事情都需要更着實了解，還有這樣那樣原來自己那麼無知，要填補的漏洞那麼多，要學習的新事物那麼重要——但或都怕趕不及了。退下公職是應分的，一代有一代的事，但此地大事一樁又一樁，又不忍置若罔聞。有時像《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》的白兔先生，一手拿着袋表一邊急步走：哎呀！我要遲到了！
活了那麼多歲，還是有點好處的。我不愛交際，不做networking，卻是不知不覺積聚了不少好朋友。舊友醇如酒，新交投合，也是一見如故，無分彼此。於是，當此踏入七十高齡之際，有長我幾歲甚至只長我幾個月的老友記紛紛以先驅自居，送上安慰，而小朋友又別出心裁，低調別開生面祝賀。我不知面前道路長短，但我深知，到了八十，我也只感到只有六歲。
