不要隨便「O」嘴
Game over， 玩完。這over 的o， 大聲清楚。就像OK、open、omen（預兆）、opal（蛋白石）等。Over 讀o-ver，那oven（焗爐）就一樣讀o-ven？
錯。Oven 讀u-ven，亦即o for u，讀uh。奇怪？想一想，許多常用字，串法明明有o，卻不必「o」嘴，反而成了u 音︰
■ Other（其他）︰讀uther
■ Brother（兄弟）︰讀bruther
■ Mother（母親）︰讀muther
還有英文中可能是最多人講的一句話︰ Ilove you （ 我愛你） ， 讀I luv you。Love 變luv。
另有例子︰ Dove （ 鴿子） ， 讀duv。
Above，發音abuv。
這樣說，卻又不等於所有-ove 尾的英文字就都讀uv，像drove（drive 的過去式）就如常讀dr-ove， 還有stove （ 煮食爐） ， 依然係st-ove。
也即是說，英文跟所有語文一樣，發音模式會忽然不跟規矩，沒有邏輯，不可理喻，唯有多講多聽，死記變習慣。
另一款有o 的字，像dose（劑量）、hose（喉管）、nose（鼻子）、rose（玫瑰）、pose（擺「甫士」），都讀正常的-ose，但lose（輸了、失去）卻讀loose，明明只得一個o，發音卻是兩個o。
最後再一提其他o for u，不必「o」嘴的字，有︰
Purpose（目的）︰讀purpus，就像跟focus（焦點）押韻。許多香港人都把這個字錯讀pur- pose，但因為不會引起誤會，人人明白，只是不好聽。
Government（政府）︰讀guvernment；而governor（總督）就順着去讀guvernor。這也是英國人口頭語guv（ 「老細」）的來源。Tortoise（烏龜）︰照計，一樣是-oise 尾的字，有noise（聲音）、poise（穩重姿態）等，讀法也一樣吧？會有老師因而教錯。不，tortoise 這個字更出奇的，是後面的-oise，當中的i 完全無聲，繼而o for u。Tortoise ︰讀tortus！
