人物真情趣 – 字趣：cut
坦白說，我讀中學時，英文grammar一科往往僅僅及格。但我對英文的興趣很大，愈學得多、用得多，就愈覺得英文字的字趣無窮。但英文是要憑多閱讀、多聽、多留心每個字的使用方式，才可以真正領會到的。
我喜歡淺白的字，例如get、do、go、home、cut等等。今天，讓我談談cut這個字。
You’ve cut your finger!——你割傷手指了！Cut是指用鋒利的邊沿割開了表面，用刀、剪刀、碎紙機、切肉機等切開物件，都可稱為cut。我們說paper cutting或newspaper cutting，cut這個動作變為cutting——cut成的物件。從一株植物剪下，以供插枝種植的一枝，稱為cutting；剪下來插瓶的花枝，叫做cut flowers，cut是作形容詞用。
Cut、cutting這兩個字時而動詞，時而名詞，時而形容詞，時而引伸意義為比喻，真是妙用無窮，如果你好奇地探索一下，可能還得到很多有趣的小故事。
「Cut!」你猜是什麼意思？導演叫停機，可能做得不好，要即時重複，總之就是有「立刻」的意思：鋒利切斷。所以「Cut it out!」是叫你馬上閉嘴、馬上停止你正在做的事、中斷你的習慣。「Cut it!」是叫你馬上逃跑。
Cut是裁衣，因需用利剪，是名詞︰「I ask my tailor to cut me a coat.」不是叫裁縫剪開或剪斷你的外套，而是替你裁製一件外套。但cut也是名詞：the cut of your coat——這裏有點社會歷史，不是單指衣服的剪裁或款式，而是整件衣服由哪一流的師傅製造，是高級還是低級，引伸至a cut above——He is a cut above them的詞語。
凱撒大帝遇刺身亡，刺客中最令他傷心的是老友記的一刀：the unkindest cut of them all；cutting remark是尖銳的評語，如果his friends have cut him out，他的朋友跟他割蓆絕交了。
