令人深思的矛盾
Being cynical 是對人、事、物都抱著一絲懷疑，「都唔知係唔係嘅」，不一定牽涉隆重堂皇的題目，瑣碎如看到橙汁盒子背面印上了：Pure 100% orange juice from concentrate，心裏頭就開始嘀咕，經過濃縮精華製作的橙汁，又怎麼會是百份百、純天然的橙汁呢？
依此類推，產品若自稱什麼Pure .999，因為留下了一丁點的數字餘地，亦即並非百份百，縱使未至於「呃人」，總令人覺得不盡不實。
還有一句One size fits all， 真有可能嗎？One 相對all，囊括所有不同尺碼的高矮肥瘦，統統合適？
1 比99，或1 對所有的狀，純粹用文字解釋，簡直就係個paradox，當中的兩難，會令含義模糊得可以。不過，我們的日常話，又會不時綑上這種花邊。像形容一個人或一個處境做：
Perfectly ridiculous 完美地可笑。
Brilliantly dull 醒目地沉悶。
Awfully good 可怖地好。
當然，英文多用多講就會領略到，上面三個助形容詞perfectly、brilliantly 及awfully，查實都不過等於very、extremely、remarkably等等，都解非常、極之罷了。
所以，如果聽到實際上看似不可能的話，就要嘗試理解其實是可能的，像這一句：
He is alone in a crowd. 他孤單地在人群中。
這句話要說的，或是這人真沒有同行者，又或他的感覺是，愈是喧鬧，他益發寂寞。Anarchy rules. 無政府狀態統治。
說的既是無政府主義，即沒有任何規矩、範條、法律，那麼由誰統治，統什麼治呢？
To rule，固然解統治，但深層一點的意思，是a known principle that states the way things are，也就有支配、主宰之意。說一個地方成了anarchy rules，就是說anything goes，完全混亂complete chaos，什麼事情都可以發生。
於是，與人交往，或從傳媒接收訊息，碰上一些原應覺得出奇的字，但大家就都習以為常了。諸如：
Benign tumour 良性腫瘤Farewell reception 歡送的歡迎（酒會）Unknown knowledge 不知的知識Upcoming downtrend 冒上來的下調走勢A pattern of unpredictability 不可測的軌Inevitable possibility 避不過的可能False fact 錯誤的事實Fictional truth 創作的真相Extremely neutral 極端地中立Fatally injured 致命地受傷Female gunman 女性的（男）槍手Zero deficit 零的赤字也提一句令人深思的矛盾oxymoron 句子：Mind the vices of our virtues. 小心我們美德中的邪惡。
