似潮非潮的viz
英文26 個字母當中，用v 或z 開頭的字，確係比較少。上周提到的vibe 與zing，看似潮字，似乎好另類好fringe，但其實差不多有100 年歷史。
語文隨民風變遷，用法也會不一樣。像個zing 字，他們說，英語社會的年輕人，會用之作一個隨口發音。例：
甲：Your room smells like a pigsty. 你的房間氣味像豬欄。
乙：That’s because you’re in it. ZING! 那是因為你在場。哈！很明顯，zing 這個音，是在成功調笑對方之後發出的。老實說，我未聽過。大家知道就好。
還有， zing 原來亦係一個網上俚語Internet slang，解owned，已有人認頭、名花有主。
因為vibe 與zing，就興起一想，英文有沒有由v 開頭，用z 結尾的字？霎時只想到一個：viz。
Viz，睇落又好似個潮字，查實非常古典，係古英語加拉丁文，解「茲此陳述、即係、也即是說」之類；英文的equivalent，係namely、that is to say、in other words。就像etc，因為係個簡寫，所以技術上後面應該加個fullstop。但又當然，不加也不算犯規。
‧ We share the same ambition, viz., to getrich quick. 我們有共同野心，即係搵快錢，做快富。
‧ He committed three crimes, viz, robbery,assault and car theft. 他犯了三條罪，茲此陳述：打劫、傷人及偷車。
‧ She has had three dogs, viz, Darkie,Dogma and Marble. 她有過三隻狗，也即是說小黑、Dogma 及孖寶。
Z 尾的字，除了quiz 問答遊戲，許多都是專有名詞。Ritz 就兩樣都係，既是一家大酒店的名字，一聽就有花光滿路似的奢華，同時亦係常用語。
Put on the ritz， 就係expensivelystylish 的衫。
於是任何ritzy 的人事物， 都代表bling-bling 盛世，總之就係deluxe。另有一個字，意思類似，但那個豪而型的程度，就更上好幾層樓：pizzazz！這個字睇或聽落都似pizza，但同意大利薄餅完全無關，解dazzling in style、full ofvitality and glamour，就像我們口語話「靚到震、掂到暈、型到痺」。
一個講法，是這個字出自1930 年代，由時尚雜誌Harper’s Bazaar 一個叫DianaVreeland 的女編輯所作。但不要誤會，以為這個字只可用於時裝或奢侈品。不是呢，其實講什麼都可以：
‧ The new song has plenty of pizzazz. 那首新歌掂到暈。
‧ He doesn’t have the pizzazz to play theleading role in the film. 他不夠魅力勝任影片中的男主角。
也不要給zzzz 嚇窒，pizzazz 讀法如常，同jazz 押韻，pi – zzazz。
又記得嗎？英文的Zzzzz，即覺的符號。完書，好好睡一覺，明天又是另一天。學好英文，眼界更闊，心境倍寬，更可以全世界通山跑。
