俚語俗話
如果忽然搬去一個英語社會生活，即使自覺一直學會了規規矩矩的英文，但日出日落，總難免仍有一些文化衝擊。人家的口語與俗話，就是聽不慣，那就要入鄉隨俗了。
即使千禧年代也已過了這些年，難保不會仍有英國老太太一時問你有沒有Mackintosh，即是雨褸； 一時又問你要不要Wellingtons（或簡稱Wellies），即雨靴或水靴。那兩個都是百多年前生產商的名稱，確曾一度變成了代名詞。
住過英國的人都知道，去loo，即是去廁所；而spend a penny（花一個便士），一樣係去廁所，源自舊時的公廁要塞入一個硬幣，才可以開門進去。
搭Tube，是他們的地鐵；問你拿fag，通常是指香煙──英國人口語同時亦把fag 解做沉悶規律的事。What a fag 亦即what a bore。例：”Such a fag to have to walk the dog every dayfor my mother,” the boy complained.
但若在美國，就要非常小心，不要隨便講fag。因為這字在美式俚語中，是對同性戀者一個侮辱的稱謂。
於是你形容一件無聊的事做what a fag，自以為無傷大雅，但對方如果誤會你是在說某個人，那就大件事了。美國縱使開放，許多地方在這方面仍然非常敏感。
而多看了荷李活電影，也會留意到美國人讚歎的時候，喜歡說：”Awesome!”
要記得awesome 與awful 是相反詞。英國人在批評或頓足之際，最鍾意講”That’s awful!”而電影，英文係film 或movie，但另有一俚字，叫flick：
This is so coincidental. It’s almost likeflick-cute. 這個太巧合了！巧合得就像電影的情節（就好似拍戲咁）。
一個講法是，flick 來自flickering，指電影發展早期又閃又眨的畫面，flickering of early filmimages。
Flick 原本只係用來形容一些粗糙的製作，但今日就所有的電影都給包攬了。也即是說，若想話一套戲很cheap，就要真的講明：
It’s a cheap flick about some scary monster.
這是套講什麼鬼怪的cheap 戲。又估skin flick 咩？ 「皮膚戲」，即是porn，鹹片。
最後一提wheel，車轆。口語講，單數就指單車；眾數wheels，就等於car 了。 Do you have wheels for the weekend?你周末有車子可用嗎？
而behind the wheel 的wheel，係駕駛盤。在駕駛盤後面，亦即司機。但當然，要用做比喻，問人who is behind the wheel，就是問是誰in charge，邊個係統領者。
還有wheel and deal，為個人利益、自己數，不擇手段。
He wheeled and dealed his way to the topposition. 他處處鑽營，爬到高位。
