截至2014年，全球有多達2萬架現役民航客機，波音公司更預測在未來20年內，全球的新飛機需求會達至36,770架，單是亞太區市場已經需要 13,460架新飛機，顯示全球航空業正在高速增長。但在另一方面，多個國家已開始出現機師荒，誘發各大小航空公司的高薪挖角戰。

早在4月份，中國多家航空公司的數百名機師，極罕有地以具名聯署方式發表公開信，要求中國政府允許提升國內機師的自由度及流動率。到5月中兩間日本 廉航樂桃航空(Peach Aviation)及香草航空(Vanilla Air)，先後宣佈因內部機師人數不足而要取消大量航班，前者在5月至10月期間取消的班次高達2000班！
