反「大陸化」的歷史評價
大陸化……mainlandisation？但英文沒有這個字，可以自行作個新字嗎？可以，人家聽得懂就好。語言貴於習用，講得多了，多人講了，一個新字變成通用語，日子有功，慢慢就會給收入字典，成為正規文字的一部分。
大陸、mainland。所有XX 化，用做動詞會加-ise（美國人多用-ize），而變做名詞，就加-isation 或-ization。「拒絕大陸化」原是我的選舉口號， 直譯就是”Say no to mainlandisation”。但其時未敢自創新字，包含的主要信息，是捍衛香港本土的精神面貌，於是口號的英文版本，就改成”Hong Kong identity comesfirst”——香港「身分」先行。
反大陸化針對的不是大陸人、mainlander，而是社會及制度的實况，所以曾有大學生將之寫成mainlander-isation，就錯了。
卻是，不過數個月間，mainlandisation這字已頻頻在本地西報出現，包括這句：Hong Kong’s fear of “mainlandisation”stems from everyday frustration. 「香港對大陸化的恐懼，沿自日常生活中（因大陸的一套而生） 的焦慮」。留意mainlandisation 終歸也有用” “號括起，以示並非尋常用語。
及至這兩個星期的國際傳媒，一樣開始用上這字， 說香港有alleged signs of”mainlandisation”——涉嫌「大陸化」的徵狀。
梁振英政府會否剔除得了香港人這副惶恐不安呢？會有人說，就留待歷史評價。政治領袖常談到歷史會給他們怎樣的裁決：Political leaders often talk about thejudgements history will deliver to them.
作為名詞， 「歷史評價」是judgementof history、historical judgement。但在英文中多以動詞形式出現，to be judged byhistory、讓歷史審判。於是，新聞中常聽到政治人說：”I am prepared to be judged by history.”「我準備好（亦即有信心）接受歷史批判。」
“History will be my judge.” 「歷史會是我的審判官」， 等於自稱「會對得起歷史」。
但類似的話由別人道來， 「他會由歷史來評價」，He will be judged by history；這句話，乍聽即使好像一切仍是未知之數，就留待日後定奪；語氣其實就已做了眼前的負面評價。看以下有關美、英聯手攻打伊拉克、英國人對當時首相的批評：In the end, Tony Blair will be judged byhistory. 最終，貝理雅要受歷史審判。
