名人教英文 – 「地產霸權」一條news
潮流興講地產霸權，曾見有人譯做landmonopoly，land 是土地，monopoly 是壟斷；土地壟斷，意思當然有，但肯定失了原句帶出地產商頤指氣使、不可一世的感覺。
地產商，property developers，可以去掉property， 只說developers， 即發展商。因為跟中文一樣， 「發展商」一般理解發展的是土地房產，不會跟你發展感情，所以不必長氣說「地產發展商」。霸權是hegemony （ 霸權主義是hegemonism），這個字，話說來自希臘文hegemon， 解leader （ 領袖） ，hegemonia 就是leadership、authority（權勢）、rule（統治）等等。
Hegemony 原本是國際外交術語， 指dominating influence of one nation over another，也即是說，裏頭充滿蝦蝦霸霸、bullying 的意思，並非指什麼領袖風采，遑論王者風範。
綜合上述，地產霸權，英文developerhegemony 就好。或問， 要不要改成developer’s 或developers’？不用了。就像菲律賓前總統阿基諾夫人發起的PeoplePower（人民力量），也不必說People’s+ Power， 兩個名詞打孖上； 於是，developer + hegemony， 一樣是妥當的double noun。
反地產霸權→anti-developer hegemony這番反對抗議，曾包括「街」行動，英文叫a lie-down protest。Lie down，過去式lay down，是「躺下」，這個示威姿勢當然並非香港首創，外國早有。如果想說得清楚一點，的是街，不是或其他地點， 是a lie-down-in-the-streetprotest。Street 用road 代替，一樣得。
都說香港是示威之都，個個星期有大型抗議新聞。新聞，news，是一個奇字，是形容詞new 加個s。因為有s，許多人都誤解這是個複數名詞，當說到一條新聞或消息的時候，會說”what a good news!”，錯了。
News，是一個singular mass noun，只說what good news 或what a piece of good news 才對。說what a good piece of news 同樣可以。
一個講法，是n-e-w-s 四個字母，源自north、east、west、south 四個方向，但這恐怕有點一廂情願，無從稽考。
問有沒有新聞︰”Is there any news?”有編輯堅持錯問︰”Are there any news?”記者於是答：”Not a new!”
