名人教英文 – 「猶抱琵琶」英文怎麼講？
猶抱琵琶半遮臉，英文怎麼講呢？這句古詩給引用至今日，並非純粹話人害羞什麼的，而是帶濃濃的「你怕醜呀？唔制又制呀？」的嘲諷。
報上讀到一句有關特首選舉的句子， 「眾所周知的有意參選人猶抱琵琶半遮臉」， 給譯成Every one of those whom everybody knows to be Chief Executive aspirants “half-hides his or her face behind a pipa still”。
這個譯法，沒錯，中文人都知道pipa 即係琵琶。但西人就出奇了，pipa？什麼傢伙？仍要解釋，往往就是中英直譯的麻煩。
讀過金庸小說，都該會記得「琴瑟琵琶，八大王一般頭面」這句話，代表中文字形之美。琵琶是樂器，而枇杷，有說因形態似琵琶（我從不覺得），故得名。枇杷一樣音讀pipa，或粵語發音的peipa， 更有許多西人叫之做loquat。Loquat？
原來音譯自「蘆橘」，枇杷的古名。記得嗎，蘇東坡的名句「日啖荔枝三百顆」，對上一句就有「蘆橘楊梅次第新」。
回說「猶抱琵琶」，用英文講，可以考慮用shy away，以個shy 字來襯一襯「半遮臉」。
To shy away from someone, or something. 這個shy， 查實沒有害羞的意思， 解avoid、evade，即避過、躲過。
The government official tends to shy away from reporters，那個官員傾向躲開記者。
於是， 「眾所周知的特首候選人猶抱琵琶」一句，可試譯：
All the known Chief Executive (CE) aspirants have been shying away from announcing their candidacy. 亦即講明， 有如此志向的人（aspirant） ， 尚未成為正式候選人（candidate）。
這一款疑似候選人， 亦可叫做candidate-in-waiting。乜乜-in-waiting，是「等住上位」，加一點蓄勢待發的味道。譬如說，在台灣有人叫蔡英文做Taiwan’spresident-in-waiting。
形容一個人是xx-in-waiting，視乎上文下理，彈讚都得。像有人選班長、選主席，都未投票，就儼然以當選姿態出現， 叫這人做prefect-in-waiting、chairman-in-waiting， 就是「單打」他了。相反，一句The young singer isa superstar-in-waiting，就肯定是讚美。
疑似候選人猶抱琵琶？加個coy，解忸怩作態： All the known CE aspirants remain coy candidates-in-waiting.
