名人教英文 – 「盲搶鹽」的pun
「盲搶鹽」， 英文當然不可直譯appendicitis（盲腸炎）。這一筆，擺明玩字、玩發音、玩pun。Pun 指語帶雙關，有時是一字兩義，像「制服」，既可以是一套衣衫，也可以去「制服」一個人；bark 既解「狗吠」，亦可作「樹皮」。也即是說，玩語帶雙關，每套文字自成一國，往往不可能傳神地譯做外語。
「盲搶鹽」，講rush to/scramble to buy salt都得。Rush 已有匆忙的意思，而scramble 就更多了要爭的味道。記得嗎？Scrambled eggs不就是「炒蛋」。但要加添恐慌之象，最好還是用panic 一字：
盲搶鹽——panic buying of salt或問， 逐個字意譯可以嗎， 譬如說blind（盲）snatching（搶）of salt？這樣說，明白是明白的，但就是不自然，因為不是英文的慣常講法。要記得，直譯純粹扮好玩無妨，像「笑死我」變成laugh die me，但要學好一套外語， 終歸要習慣人家的usage。就像minimum wage， 我們都慣了講「最低工資」，忽然有人講「最少薪水」，聽起來就是突兀。
回說pun，一個經常引用的例子，是說見一個獨臂人一手捧許多東西，樣子有點狼狽，你想幫忙，於是說：Can I give you a hand？
這句話的字面意思是「我可以給你一隻手嗎？ 」， 但習用意思， 不就是「我可以幫『手』嗎？」。如果真發生這個場面，或就該加一句，no pun intended，講清楚無意冒犯。
一套文字代表一套文化，而文化往往與生活有關。像聽到人家的一句自嘲：My doctor says I look like a million dollars —green and wrinkled， 我的醫生說我看來像（值）一百萬元——綠而皺。玩的是美鈔顏色偏綠，又叫greenback，紙幣又總是皺的多。
一個出名得意的玩pun 廣告標語，源自一隻西方牌子的餐桌鹽：When it rains, it pours。
說下雨天即使潮濕，他們出品的鹽不會黏在一起，倒得出來。
Rains（下雨）跟reigns（統治）發音一樣，引來米芝蓮車胎的一句： When it pours, it reigns，下大雨之際，我們的車胎稱霸。
