名人教英文 – 「鬼拍後尾枕」之餘……
「新聞自由是捍衛自我審查的最有效方法」——吓？傳媒的自我審查（conducting self-censorship）肯定是壞事，怎會去捍衛？看，一些日常誇啦啦的話，講得多了，耳熟能詳至似是而非，出了大錯也不會自覺。
出問題的，是政府的官方新聞稿，有電視新聞報道照讀如儀；但新聞稿的英文版，卻是好端端的： A free press is the most effective safeguard against self-censorship……也即是說，中文漏譯了當中against 的意思。
Safeguard=捍衛
Safeguard against=抵禦
這番出錯， 不管是「鬼拍後尾枕」（a Freudian slip，漏嘴說了心底話），還是無心之失（an honest mistake），只見因為一個小小的介詞，就鬧了大大的笑話。
也曾見過一篇政黨的新聞稿，原意是爭取民主，fight for democracy，但英文版不知怎地打漏for 字，變成fight democracy， 「打擊民主」，好得人驚。
Fight crime=打擊犯罪
Fight graft=打擊貪污=Fight corruption留意fight 這款用法，意思是fight against，但可以不用against 這個字。
掉過頭來，有一個字discriminate，解做歧視之際，後面永遠跟against。
I feel I am being discriminated → 錯I feel I am being discriminated against → 對中文的歧視，已帶敵對的意思，譯做英文就會容易漏了against。
The job market still discriminated women → 錯The job market still discriminated against women → 對但歧視作名詞用，在discrimination 後面，除非講明受排斥的對象， 不然不用加against。
This is a case of discrimination → 對This is a case of discrimination against new immigrants → 對除了要記得discriminate AGAINST， 還有dispose OF（丟掉、捨棄、去除），一樣容易出錯。
大家或會先聯想到disposable 這個字，所謂「一次性」的東西，包括餐具、手套、尿片、剃刀等等，用完即棄。
棄掉了：I disposed it → 錯I disposed of it → 對The subject has been disposed of，目標已經除掉。如果是一個殺手說這樣的話，即是他的行動成功。
A dictator who disposes of all his enemies,real or imagined，一個除掉所有敵人——不管真假——的獨裁者。
