名人教英文 – 不同的「豬」
學英語要多運用，最好找一些自己有興趣的議題入手。最近大家關注議題非豬流感莫屬。中文豬就是豬，野豬、母豬也是豬，英文引人入勝的地方是變化多端，詞彙（vocabulary）比中文繁多，若以近代字典來說，《中華字海》收字8.5萬個，但Oxford English Dictionary裏的英文字超過60 萬個。「豬」的英文名稱便有pig、swine、hog、boar 等不同說法，boar 一般指野豬，而其他英文字雖然都解作豬，但用法可以不同。
有些報道稱甲型H1N1 流感為pig flu，正統醫學名稱是swine influenza。一般豬染的豬流感病毒swine influenza virus SIV 很少會傳染人，但今次甲型H1N1 流感的病毒就包含豬、禽鳥及人類流感病毒，令H1N1可以人傳人，亦有人傳豬的個案。
雖然同是指豬，但英文pig 與swine 很多時用法不同。當你看見一頭可愛粉紅色小肥豬，你會說「What a cute little pig」或「What a lovelypiglet」，絕不會用swine。而以swine 用來形容人，不是肥胖的意思，而是等於「豬玀」，有卑鄙下流之意，例如「What a filthy swine!」，所以在英國， swine 被裁定為unparliamentarylanguage（非議會語言）。
馬太福音Sermon on the Mount（登山寶訓）中就有一句Give not that which is holy unto thedogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine,lest they trample them under their feet and turnagain and rend you，意即「豬玀面前不要放珍珠」，意思就是無謂讓不懂欣賞的人糟蹋好東西。中國都有類似比喻，但不用豬而用牛， 「對牛彈琴」等於「叫豬賞珠」。
Hog 指供食用的肥豬或閹公豬，所以貪得無厭的人就是greedy hog，而hoggish 指自私霸道。
Hog 又可以當動詞，例如你到圖書館，見到一個無公德心的人霸佔一大堆書，難道他一雙眼睛可以同時看這麼多書？ 你可以說︰ 「Why is hehogging all the books, can he read them all atthe same time?」不過hog 不一定是壞事，假如你十分拼搏，全力以赴，除了說go all the way，也可以說go the whole hog，學英語便應該抱着這種態度！
