名人教英文 – 先有洗腦，才有brainwash？
潮流興講「洗腦」教育， 洗腦， to brainwash。西人有句話： Train up a child,not brainwash a child，即訓練好一個孩童，並非要洗他的腦。
Brainwash， 就像wash， 後面加ing 成了brainwashing。要注意的是，have a wash，洗一洗，於是，跟carwash 一樣，brainwash 同時亦可做名詞。
Can education indeed be used as a brainwash device？教育真的可以用做洗腦工具嗎？
我少時初學brainwash 這個字，源自荷李活間諜科幻一類電影。原以為，近半個世紀大量英文入侵中文，諸如sustainable development 給譯做什麼「可持續發展」，中文「洗腦」，直譯自brainwash？ Mmm … 原來就像中文的「不行」，入了英文變成No go；這一筆，一樣是掉過頭來，由中譯英，先有中文的「洗腦」。一個主要講法，是得牛津字典記載，英文brainwash第一次出現於1950 年10 月，在一個美國記者兼情報員的筆下，他形容的是其時中共建國初用的一套清洗人民「反動帝國」思想的手段。於是，好些字典的brainwash 解說， 都來一句： A calque（借用外語）of the Chinese xi nao （洗腦），更有加一句中文原有的「洗心」（革面）來佐證。死未？
世事有黑就有白。另一個講法，卻是那個製造brainwash 一字的原作者， 查實係個CIApsychological Warfare specialist passing as a journalist，是美國中情局一個扮做記者的心理戰術專家，除了「唱衰」（badmouth）中共，亦用來否認美軍戰俘承認曾在韓戰用上生化武器的口供；意思是，那些口供受洗腦後所作，不足為信。
Brainwashing 同義詞有mind control（思想控制）、thought reform（思想改造），包含unethically manipulative methods to persuade someone —不倫理、不道德的操控手段去說服、信服、臣服一個人。
Brainwash 起初用於戰爭與政治，70 年代開始套諸宗教，即所謂邪教，但小心，英文cult 這個字，本身只解極端、不正統，並無「邪惡」的意思。時至今日，大眾媒介，尤其是電視廣告，都給說成有brainwashing effect、「入」腦作用，不一定是貶話。
但把教育大張旗鼓講明是洗腦，就令人難過了。
