名人教英文 – 又要威，又要戴頭盔
頭盔，是helmet。「又要威，又要戴頭盔」英文怎麼講？是說一個人wants to grab the limelight（聚光燈），即要威、彩、出風頭，and yet also wants to play safe，卻又仍要戴頭盔，先計安全。但就這麼譯，只覺awkward（彆扭），不大通順。於是想到麻鷹捉雞仔的強弱對比，可以話人Talkinghawk、acting chicken——講就巴閉先鋒似隻鷹，但姿勢又見閃縮像雞仔。
Chicken 在美國俚語中，是笑人timid（膽小）及cowardly（懦弱）。頑童少年常常互相調侃： chick-chick-chick-chicken！ To chicken out of something， 是原來去馬的事，想想怕了，還是退縮。
把雞與鷹炒作一堆，叫人chickenhawk，是美國近代新聞流行語，主要針對政界人物逃避兵役。表表者是美國前總統老布殊的副手Dan Quayle（丹．奎爾），他遭人攻擊曾用家族關係扯線，避過在越戰中服役。有這個很出名的笑話——
問： What do you get when you combine a chicken and a hawk?（把雞與鷹加起來是什麼？）
答：Quail!（鵪鶉！）
玩的是副總統的姓Quayle，跟quail 的諧音。看，我們叫人「無膽匪類」，一樣說「鵪鶉」。
籠統說來，chicken hawk 同樣有嘲笑人沒膽又扮嘢，頗見虛偽之意，那「戴頭盔威」的人，不如就以chicken hawk 代替？亦無不可，但這會是to loosely borrow（大路借用）的講法，不會有很多人一聽就明。
於是，為安全計， 「又要威，又要戴頭盔」，最好還是平鋪淺白地意譯：A person who likes to be seen as daring, and yet won’t actually take risks——又要看來勇敢前衛，卻不願冒什麼風險。
學英文，同時領略人家的一套文化。像香港人掛在口邊的「加油！」講Add oil 可以嗎？可以，我們有語文自主權；像Long time no see（許久不見），說得多了，已入正規英文。為汽車加油，美國人說Gas up，英國人多說Fill up。我們的加油打氣意思，亦可譯Fight on（繼續努力）、Soldier on（像士兵般向前操）。
火上加油，就是Add oil to the fire？不算錯，但更好的原裝英文講法，是Add fuel（燃料）to the fire。一樣是燃料，不好說oil，是因為另有一句Pour oil on troubled waters——把油倒在不平靜的水面，鎖住波濤，即Tocalm a problematic situation，去安撫情，跟火上加油的意思，就恰恰相反了。
