名人教英文 – 字義與用字的方式
香港學生花很多時間學英文，但英語程度往往不如理想，有什麼方法改善？我留意到兩個常見的習慣，相信是英文學得不好的一個原因。
第一，就是我們太注重強記每個字的字義，而忽視語法；第二，是說話愛中英夾雜，很少說完整的英文句子。偏重字典形的字義而忽視用字的方式，兩者加起來，就往往形成以中文方式說英文了。
我舉個例子：confirm 這個常用字，大家都知道是「確定」、「證實」、「講實」的意思， 最常聽到的用法， 是跟朋友confirm 約會時間。如果我寫電郵跟你confirm 星期日的約會，應該怎樣說？是不是I confirm you Sunday’s meeting？錯！正確的說法是I confirm with you that we are meeting on Sunday。你所confirm 的是Sunday’s meeting，不是對方；跟對方confirm 某個約會，是要confirm with you 那個約會。
例如打電話覆實所訂的枱，應說：I would like to confirm my booking for lunch today.或I would like to confirm with you the booking I made for lunch today.
再舉一個例子：inform 這個字的意思是「告訴」、「通知」。
我通知你明天開會如此這般，說I inform you…… that a meeting will be held tomorrow；但I inform that a meeting will be held tomorrow 就不對了，inform 要有direct object：你通知了誰？然後才可有indirect object：通知他什麼事？
May I confirm with you that you are coming on Sunday?
Can I confirm our meeting on Sunday?
He informs us that 5 people are coming on Sunday.
習慣了說完整的句子，就不容易錯了。
還有另一個時常聽到人用得不對的詞，就是excuse。港鐵車廂內很擠迫，要前面的乘客讓開，廣東話說： 「唔該，借過！」用英文，就應說： 「Excuse me, please!」；廣東話縮短為「唔該！」，英文就變了「Excuse! Excuse!」，這是非常不可愛的錯誤，這個me 是省不掉的。不說please， 「Excuse me!」只是不夠客氣，省掉me，就出洋相了。
