名人教英文 – 學英文，不扮嘢
得彭志銘邀，合作寫一本日常口語中英對照的書。是日寫到「長氣」，英文long-winded ︰ What along-winded speech! 這麼長氣的演講！
純粹好奇，上網看看有沒有別的翻譯。不得了，在一個中譯英字典網站，見長氣給叫做dominant qi、pyretic qi of the heart， 嚇得跌落地。
「氣」的普通話拼音是qi，像qigong 是「氣功」。但，dominant qi， 「主要的氣」？而pyretic 是個偏僻的字，一般字典都不會有，跟「發燒」有關。Pyretic qi of the heart， 「心中『發燒』的氣」，等如長氣？救命。
又一次反映了許多人學英文的錯誤態度，以為用字要深奧，以示學問好、程度高，效果往往相反，只淪為扮、搞笑、無厘頭。今日的西方人，一樣崇尚平白自在的用語。曾聽任職《亞洲華爾街日報》的編輯朋友說，一次跟一個記者有點齟齬，因為記者下筆用了個罕見亦即「懶有」的字，編輯認為大眾傳播不應扮高深，讓讀者看報道至中途，忽然見一個生字而錯愕，窒礙接收信息的暢順。最後自然是編輯話事。
Facebook 上有朋友來問： 「悲情城市」的英文？先有人代答：同名的一部電影， 叫A City of Sadness。悲情， 確有許多同義詞， 像sorrowful、mournful、melancholy 等等，但實實在在，說A sad city 就好，不要低估簡簡單單一個sad 字的威力。
中文好些疑似壯觀的成語組詞，一樣可以簡簡單單用英文講：無濟（ 補） 於事—— 不必煩惱「事」是event 還是incident，講Itdoesn’t help。
未圓的夢—— 夢， 毋須扭台去dream，講unfinished business。
自取其辱—— 話人「自己攞黎」，You asked for it 就可以。
不要只學課本裏的公式英文，要同時多學日常英文：過渡階段—— 除非是講歷史時期，不然不是a transition period 這麼「大單」， 說That is (just) a phase。
好得人驚—— 這驚， 可以是frightening、horrible，但口語多說That’s pretty scary。
