名人教英文 – 有關動物的idioms
英語靈活生動，動詞和名詞經常以動物的相關特色作比喻。英國人愛貓狗， 留意牠們的生活習慣和特性， 有關的成語（idioms）更是趣味盎然。最常被引作例子的肯定是raining cats and dogs，即下大雨的意思，比起廣東話俚語「落狗屎」，異曲同工，卻又少幾分粗俗。
中國人罵人喜歡用狗作比喻，例如「豬狗不如」。狗在英文裏的地位無疑高許多，以狗比喻人毫無貶抑之意。我在某健身室看到最喜歡的一句： 「It’s not the size of dog in fight, it’s the size of fight in dog.」，意思是內心鬥志激昂比實力強弱更重要。
Underdog 是處於劣勢的人，slumdog 這字因電影《一百萬零一夜》（ Slumdog Millionaire） 而聲名大噪，意指窮人。英語世界的人極度欣賞underdogs 和slumdogs 奮鬥向上的故事，所謂美國夢（American dream）或者香港的獅子山下精神，核心就是一個個rags to riches 的奮鬥故事。
「做到隻狗咁」的英文是to work like a dog，工作辛苦至極的境况，通宵達旦的日子，相信許多香港人都不會陌生。奧巴馬的演說就激勵美國人： 「It may look dark tonight, but if I hold on to hope, tomorrow will be brighter.」（今夜天色或許陰沉，但只要我不放棄希望，明日天色定更晴朗。）相關的成語是every dog has its day，每隻狗都有牠那一天，意指每個人都有「發圍」的一日。
據說前特首董建華在辦公室裏，事無大小均事事關心、親力親為。朝七晚十一，令他頭髮花白。身為行政長官，雖然不是民選產生，也必要學懂下放權力，讓下屬處理瑣碎事情，自己集中精神施政決策。董伯伯最需要的，就是you don’t get a dog and bark yourself 這個很「啜核」的idiom。時至今天，曾蔭權在政制議題使出拖字訣，他上任時所謂的「飲香港水，流香港血」，全都是bullshit（牛糞，意指廢話，查字典會看到「粗」「俚」這兩個註解，不可隨意使用）。
「護樹大隊長」唐英年遲遲不肯推出樹木法保護樹木和公眾安全，我決定在來年立法會年度提出私人議案（private bill），因為如果我們等政府行動，還要等多久？ 答案是： 「When pigs fly.」
