名人教英文 – 混蛋．政制
老師常常教導學生不可以講粗口，寫作也要避諱粗俗或口語化的用字。不過，最近英語世界的時事權威《經濟學人》（ TheEconomist）雜誌就以a bastard system 來形容香港現時極為畸形的立法會功能組別（functional constituency）。
查看字典，其實bastard 除了「混蛋」外，還有許多其他意思：私生子、贗品、混種、「傢伙」等。英文許多時一字多義，那怎樣才能理解清楚這裏的bastard 是指什麼呢？別處的bastard又有什麼意思？
文章提及政制及內地事務局長林瑞麟說：香港人要等到2017 年的特首作決定，才知到2020 年的立法會選舉會否廢除功能組別。編輯又以rotten boroughs 來揶揄功能組別是腐爛的議席。的而且確，大部分功能組別議員，挾極少票數入立法會，擁驚人缺席和不投票率。觀乎上文下理（to read between the lines），這樣的功能組別制度，除了混蛋，還是什麼？
贗品，在英語一般來說會用上sham 這個字。可見於上至英國上議院（House of Lords） 的大法官（Law Lords） 的判辭（judgment），下至日常生活，市民大眾罵人口講「強政厲治」、「終極方案」卻完全「無料到」。例句：Donald, you area total sham!5 區總辭，眾所周知在政治上存在極大風險。如果北京承諾2017 年和2020 年有雙普選，我們為什麼執著於2012 年而興波作浪？（Why make a fuss about 2012?）
答案很簡單，這不是政治豪賭，不是無中生有，不是唯恐天下不亂；而是多得功能組別多番阻撓──公平競爭法難產、最低工資一拖再拖，香港貧富懸殊全球第一，政制不通，官商勾結。市民自發遊行示威漸趨激進，民怨沸騰，things are getting out ofhand。與其坐以待斃，香港人藉5區總辭，親身參與開埠以來第一次就單一議題的全民公投。無論結果如何，都是香港人以自己的意願，感受民主的真諦。Deeds, not words。以選票和行動來證明一切。
香港人， 不要靠誰， 命運就掌握在自己手。Don’t let thebastards grind you down!
