名人教英文 – 潮語真貌
潮語「升le╱呢」是個壞英文加上壞中文合成的詞語； 「le」是英文level 省掉第二個音——這是壞英文，中文「呢」不是l 音而是n 音：與呢絨、燕語呢喃、尼姑，同是n 音。
我們今天講講level 的意思和語法。Level 是名詞：即是水平。The water level is rising： 水漲了。借用作程度His level ofeducation is moderate， 他的教育程度只是一般。AdvancedLevel 是高級考試， O Level （Ordinary Level） 是初級考試。Level 也是形容詞：This road is level，此路平坦。也是動詞：They level off the mountain top，他們削平了山頭。不分貴賤，人皆有死，所以詩人稱Death the leveler。
所以，若要規矩地提高水平，可以raise the level，可以bringour English to higher level。
「升呢」吸引人之處可能是短：兩個音比「升level」更爽脆。但有另一個好的英語說法也是兩個音：就是upgrade。We willupgrade your ticket to First Class，多好！Grade 與level，形象不同。Level（水平）是連續的；Grade（等級）是逐級跳。聲浪提高，The noise level is increasing；行動升級，They step upthe action；You must work harder to make the grade，要達到程度，你得更加努力！
中文不一定用「高」、「低」，提高水平或提升待遇，也可以用平面的「規格」，破格接待。「格」是制，是常規，破格當然是比常規優待了。甚至平面也不用， 「加」官「晉」爵， 「加」與「晉」，不用le 也是升的意思，但典雅得多了。
英文有沒有相近的說法呢？即時想到的是extra（額外）：extra care、extra fine，但留意extraordinary 不一定是褒義，反而可指「奇怪」，貶意濃厚。
