名人教英文 – 熟字生用 自創英文語境
為什麼要學好英文？To be brutally frank，一個粗暴地坦白的理由， 是英文乃pocket language， 「口袋語言」。乍聽，許多中、大學生都先會聯想pocket book，亦叫paperback，即「袋裝書」，以為就是說輕巧方便，掏出來就用的語言。年輕人沒聯想到錢，不知道deep pocket 一語是指口袋很深，即裝了許多錢，亦即有錢， 因為課本沒有， 課堂沒教。Pocket language，譯做道地廣東話，是「搵食工具」。
不能淨怪學生學的是textbook English、classroom English。老老實實，年復一年，教師跟課程大綱，教不了多少；今日學十個生字，下星期默書，過後又忘得一乾二淨。學習首講興趣，可以先從生活培養。好些亞洲社會為學生設立所謂英語村，放一兩個洋人進去，人工地搞個英語環境， 效果卻似拍戲布景， 感覺就是forced、牽強，以及phoney，假。
香港百多年曾是英國殖民地，時至今日，所有的招牌路標仍然中英對照，生字處處，可以自行豐富詞彙。
問大學生，駕車進入隧道「請用低燈」，英文怎麼說？卻是十個有九個不知，就是對生活不夠留心。是「Use dipped lights」。但吃魚要dip-dip 醬油，總是知道的，還有，對The Hang Seng Index dipped by 89 points， 「恒指（稍）跌了八十九點」一類的話，一樣感覺熟悉。
問中學生：We vent our anger 是什麼意思？Vent 未必是中學程度的字，但仍有少年人答對：他家居朗豪坊附近，在商場外見到Smoke Vent，知是「煙槽」。而vent，該就是「排放、發泄」了。
問小學生： 眼鏡舖英文怎麼叫？ 有答：Eyeglass shop，因為眼鏡通常是兩片，眾數，說eyeglasses shop 比較好。但這並非習用叫法， 留心一下， 在街上一定會見到optical shop。Optical，跟視與光有關，可以聯想到高錕的fibre optic，光纖。
吃早餐，見水果麥片盒子上印上「honest、tasty、real」。Honest？哈，連一盒麥片都可以自稱「誠實」，意思是「無添加、材料天然，沒有『整色整水』」。看，英文語境，自己創造。常向學生提議隨身帶一本小小的由A 到Z 的電話簿，用之做生字簿。生字，卻不一定是生，學會「熟」字「生」用可能更重要。譬如說soap（肥皂）跟towel（毛巾），可以在S與T的篇幅記下：
S: soap opera，電視肥皂劇。
soft soap，溫和勸誘。He gave me the soft soap; He was trying to soft-soap me into agreeing with him.
T: throw in the towel， 認輸、放棄。The weaker team refuses to throw in the towel = refuses to quit.
酒店客人常常浪費地使用毛巾，不利環保。於是，讀到Hotel guests throw in the towel on the environment，就明白當中「玩字」的意思了。
