名人教英文 – 聖誕．小秘密
不經不覺又到聖誕！聖誕除了是一個宗教節日和可以趁假期共敘天倫外，其實也是改善英語的大好機會。前幾次談過常用文法，又探討過如何改善寫作技巧，今次我們就一起增進有關聖誕的詞彙吧！
聖誕節，眾所周知英文是Christmas，但Christmas 的原意是什麼呢？翻查字典的Etymology（詞源），原來Christmas 一字是由Christ 與Mass 兩個字組成，是「基督祭典」的意思。
歐美的兒童都相信聖誕老人（Santa Claus）會在12 月24 日的平安夜（Christmas eve）爬煙囪（chimney）入屋，然後把禮物放進掛在牀邊的聖誕襪（Christmas stocking）。
香港地價高昂，不要說有獨立洋房的煙囪，就連足夠通風的大窗戶也是奢侈品，所以香港的小孩就欠缺這每年的期待了。
不過，如果父母能花時間和耐性與子女感受聖誕的團聚氣氛，例如一起閱讀狄更斯（Charles Dickens）的小說《聖誕頌》（ Christmas Carol），也不難保留小朋友的童真和想像力：麋鹿（reindeer）、小精靈（elf）、和火爐（fireplace）外下着的大雪。
在這普天同慶的日子， 我們既興奮又期待！ We are allthrilled to bits！但我們不可以忘記被社會遺忘的人，we shallleave nobody behind。Behind 就是後面的意思，beside 就是旁邊，besides 則解「除此之外」，讀者要小心不要混淆三個用法，否則就會beside the mark， 「九唔搭八」。
聖誕不僅是狂歡倒數，其實如果能和家人朋友快樂地過，同時學好英語，已經是很美好而充實的假期了！在這裏祝各位讀者聖誕快樂、新年進步！ 給自己定下一個New Year’sresolution，我的個人新年願望是什麼？當然是……秘密。I’llkeep it under my hat。哈哈！
