名人教英文 – 英文中的法文「潮」語
翻掀時尚雜誌，見介紹啡色時裝系列。照計，啡色棕色褐色，都差不多嘛，那篇報道，卻這麼形容： The colour brown is having a sweet moment in warm shades of toffee and burnt sugar.（啡色在深深淺淺的拖肥與焦糖的溫暖層次間，享受甜蜜一刻）。死未。之謂文字不死。
那篇文字的標題， 是法文： La crème decaramel，指那款似蛋撻但無外殼、淋上糖醬的甜品。現代英語表達，常常夾雜一些法文，有說，近四分之一的英文詞彙源自法文。學會一點法文，對掌握英文肯定有幫助。
曾讀一間諜小說，特工死前吐一密碼「song」，他的伙伴幾經折騰，方明白那原來是個發音一樣的法文字，sang，解blood。終於成功解碼。
除了high fashion、高級餐單及奇情小說，英語世界的日常話，亦不時加插法文字，近年注意到的有4個，都是形容詞，或可算是英文中的法文潮語：
1. Passé，讀passay，指passed one’s time，即過時「out咗」。譬如說，把恤衫後領翻起那款打扮，已成老套，可說： It’s so passé to stick up the back of your shirt collar.
An actor passé， 就是個過氣演員； a passé belle 是遲暮美人。把passé放在名詞後面，是模仿法文文法，形容詞不在前，放在後。
2. Blasé， 讀bla-zay。指因熟口熟面（over-familiarity）而引起的煩厭、聳聳肩式的冷淡。法文blaser， 即to dull： Some HK people seem to be getting blasé about politics.（有些香港人似乎開始覺得政治煩厭。）
Passé跟Blasé都帶déjà vu（直譯already seen）的意思，即已經見過，了無新意。déjà vu 原是個心理學名詞，指人與物或場景「似曾相識」。但今日的流行用法，是指重複，all over again。
3. Gauche，讀go-sh，法文的「左」。會有人誤會， 「左」即是前衛，該是褒詞？錯了。舊時的法國人認為左撇子笨拙、粗糙、不圓通，gauche 亦是這個解釋：
? He has a rather gauche writing style.（他的寫作風格頗為粗糙。）
? She made a slightly gauche remark.（她說了句不大得體的話。）
4. Touch，讀too-shay，等於touched。話說西洋劍擊中，劍尖碰到對方就得分。即現代人用來讚美人家的話「right on!」，有中文的「一語中的」、「一語道破」之意：
“All generalisations are false, including this one.” （ 「所有概括的話都是錯的，包括這句。」）
“Touché.”（ 「說得好。」）
