名人教英文 – 讀街名學vocab
Arsenal？這個字，許多年輕學生一聽或不明所以。但如果提一提，這不就是英國足球隊「阿仙奴」的音譯，大概就會有印象了。這球隊的中文名字，舊時曾一度是「兵工廠」隊……可有留意，香港有一條軍器廠街，英文是Arsenal Street。
Police arsenal includes plastic bullets.
（警方的軍火庫包括塑膠子彈。）
Police seized an arsenal of illegal weapons.
（警方緝獲一個非法軍火庫。）
看，arsenal 一字，常常與警察掛，也就容易記得香港的警察總部就在Arsenal Street-軍器廠街。學會了這個字，跟就可心領神會比喻的用法， 像arsenal of democracy， 「民主的軍火庫」。
香港曾是百多年的英國殖民地，所有街名中英對照，當中好些原裝的英文名，都可以聯想到一些地理或文化的英殖來源。行街時看路牌，留上一點心，讀街名學生字，亦是自修英文的好方法。
像廣播道，英文Broadcast Drive，從前花名「五台山」，因為當時本港所有電台和電視台，所有的broadcasters，都在廣播道上。The show was broadcast live.（節目已現場直播。）-注意broadcast 的被動講法不加-ed， 不是broadcasted， 這是傳統習用，跟cast、cost 一樣，即使是過去式，會說「It cost （costed ╳）100 dollars.」。
C 字頭的街名有Canal Road， 堅拿道。
Canal 解運河、人工河、管道，這條街在跑馬地出口，跑馬地是個山谷（記得嗎，又叫「快活谷」），有谷就有水，附近不就有一條黃泥涌道。可以想像香港開埠時那一帶的地理工程。
跟D 有在九龍塘的Durham Road，對衡道。附近有牛津道，Oxford Road，亦有劍橋道，Cambridge Road。眾所周知，劍橋牛津都是英國歷史悠久的大學；排名第三的古老大學是Durham University，正規譯名是杜倫大學。
音譯杜倫，是根據原裝的發音，當中不讀h，成了Dur-am。譯做對「衡」，顯然是誤會了要讀Dur-ham。Ham（火腿）讀ham，但這裏的ham 不讀ham，好弔詭。
類似的有h 而不讀h 的名字，是BonhamRoad，般咸道，讀Bon-am。當然還有足球明星Beckham， 「碧咸」，讀Beck-am。
