名人教英文 – 轉軚與認低威
財政預算案的爭議鬧得沸沸揚揚，最棘手的議題，the thorniest（有刺的）issue，是政府派不派錢。財政司長起初說不派，後來又決定派，用我們的口語來說，就是「轉軚」。這段日子，如果多看英文電視新聞、多讀西報，就會注意到，轉軚，可以有好些不同講法——
U-turn：這應該是大家最熟悉，亦是最常見的用語，用U 形字母來表示路線，即是掉頭。
After saying the government should not hand out cash, the finance chief did a U-turn. 說過政府不應派錢後，財爺卻又轉。
Turnaround： 跟U-turn 一樣解掉頭。但要小心，這個字同時可以有正面的意思，解「扭轉逆勢」。
The family business performed a turnaround last year. 家族生意去年扭轉逆勢。
Turn-face：這個turn，跟上面兩個turn 如出一轍，都是指「向相反方向別過去」。不同的， 是U-turn 和turnaround 都跟駕駛掛鈎，turn-face說的是一張臉，譯回做中文可說「變臉」。
About-face： 可以跟turn-face 交替使用。About 解「關於」，大家都識，但about 同時解「反方向」。
Put the ship about. 把船掉頭（向反方向駛）。
What an about-face！ 這麼番轉軚！下次聽到人說這樣一句話，千萬不要錯解為「有關面子」的事。
About-turn：話到此處，該已有讀者聯想About turn！ 這是個軍操口令，叫士兵「向後轉！」
This is an about-turn in government policy. 政府政策轉軚。這亦帶「改弦易轍」的味道。
仍然是講轉軚，但不用turn，亦不涉及face 的類似用語，有——Change tack ︰ Tack，跟揚帆航海有關，說的是帆船的航線。
They change tack on the policy. 他們就政策轉軚。這個用法，同時有「見風駛𢃇」的意象。
Flipflop：原本是我們日常叫的「人字拖」，借用來比喻穿上後走路「叭噠叭噠」的聲音姿態，不就是廣東話的「一時一樣」。
The government flipflops on its education policy. 政府就教育政策轉軚。
總結一句，大多數的轉軚，都是一款climb-down，不，不是說下台，而是「下台階」，等於認低威。
