名人教英文 – 阿媽係女人……Duh！
講「阿媽係女人」，等於說「我隻貓有鬚」、「那鳥兒有翅膀會飛」，都是世道實，講來多餘，即是廢話。在日常英文中，要表達類似的廢話， 最通用易明的一句是： And the Pope is Catholic（而教宗是天主教徒）。
Pope 的定義，就是天主教教皇，要再形容他是天主教的，就像說「家母隸屬頂著半邊天的女性」一樣無聊。
若有人問：
Is Bill Gates rich？蓋茨有錢嗎？面對這一類廢
問題，就可答：Yeah. And the Pope is Catholic.
問題是，有關教宗或蓋茨的背景，尋常英語世界中的人都會知道，都是通識；但回到東方社會，譬如說，在星、馬、泰或日韓等國講這款英文，未必人人一聽就明。於是，為安全計，另一個更顯淺亦常用的例句是：
And Paris is in France，而巴黎是在法國。
我的經驗是，香港的高小學生，一般對巴黎與法國的聯繫，不論講中英文都懂。足證這個用法夠淺。然而，真一個不好彩，有人的地理知識真的貧乏，但你又不好直譯My mother is a woman，就不如放棄比喻，直接說stating the obvious。這裏的obvious（明顯），解有目共睹、人所共知的事物。
Please stop stating the obvious，請停止講「阿媽係女人」的話。
Please stop asking the obvious，請停止問「阿媽係（咪）女人」的問題，亦即叫人不要明知故問。
又譬如說，你自覺是個小心駕駛的司機，卻有人來提醒你別衝紅燈，你的反應是「聽落嘥氣」、「懶」提醒、「使乜你講」、「得得」、「係，阿媽係女人」…… 之類，在英語世界都可歸納入一個潮字：Duh！這是近代西方少年人製造的一個發音。
Mind the red lights.Duh!
順帶一提，在別的報紙的教英文欄中，曾見有說類似「母親是女人」的英文成語，分別是TheDutch have taken Holland （荷蘭人佔據了荷蘭）、Queen Anne is dead（安女王死了），但這兩句話，恐怕出了英國沒有誰聽得懂。更大的問題是，來自劍橋的英國人都說未聽過。偏僻至此，論日用英語，不必學了。
