名人教英文 – Bi-食-cle是單車「con 筍絲」是良心
本欄開始隨附網上聲帶，新學期我們先談一點發音問題。許多人怕講英文，就是擔心發音不準，會失禮。曾在電台即場訪問一名立法會議員，論當年領導人江澤民批評香港記者simple and naive（簡單與天真），這議員開口閉口說nay-ve，錯得很。這字原是法文，要讀nai-ee-ve。因為他的身分，因為那個場合，確是有點失禮。
好些英文字的pronunciation （ 注意不是pronounciation），又真係頗無厘頭，以為跟隨拼音路線圖來pronounce，不管用。小時候初學bicycle（單車），以為讀bi-cycle，給老師糾正，於是在cycle 的cy 下面，寫下個「食」字，用廣東話來提醒自己。會有老師不喜歡這款「中文拼音」，但真不要緊嘛，純粹幫助學習記憶，學生自己覺得有用就好。
Science（科學），那麼conscience（良心） ， 就拆開讀con-science？ 錯。是con-shuhns，後半部的shuhns，我一直覺得似「筍絲」。They are prisoners of conscience， 「他們是良心犯」。
Flour 是麵粉，字形很似的有flourish，解蓬勃、茂盛——Business is flourishing， 「生意旺起來了」—— 讀flour-ish？ 錯。要讀flurish， 「飛」掉當中的「o」。
一些英文字的讀法奇特，都因為當中的「o」作怪，像：
Bosom： 胸部、懷抱。讀boo-som， o 變oo。He is my bosom friend. 「他是我可以傾訴心事的朋友。」
Chaos：混亂。讀kay-os（畸—os！），o是獨立個體， a 與o 分家。His room is a chaotic mess of clothes and computer stuff.「他房間亂糟糟，堆滿衣服及電腦物事。」Gross：西方人口頭形容「核突、肉酸」，以至有「頂唔順」之意，發音grose；oss 變ose。This is so gross! 「好難頂！」
Catholic：讀天主教學校的同學，或都知道這字可讀Cath’lic， 一樣「飛」掉o。但Catholicism（天主教教義）的讀法，卻恰恰相反， 對o 情有獨鍾， 焦點在o， 讀Ca-thol-ic-ism，而不是Catholic-ism。很多人會給xxism、xx 主義的字嚇窒，哆哆嗦嗦不知怎麼讀，但不怕，重點不過是多練習，像cosmopolitanism，世界主義，先講cosmo， 繼而politan， 再加ism，cosmo-politan-ism。
講英文，講到底不必字字靈格風，即使發音歪了，只要人家明白，貴乎溝通，不要因為有心結而寧願不開口。以下這個字，絕少聽過香港華人說得準，儘管確也不是大問題： Mischievous （ 頑皮、惡作劇、搞搞震），讀mis-chee-vous？不大對，應該是……形容不來，請上網一聽。
