名人教英文 – Speak of the devil = 講鬼話？錯了
Guilty by association，是說甲出了問題，乙因為跟這人有牽連，也一樣有問題，當中包含無辜、冤枉的意思，用中文講，即「誅九族」，有古文味道。
類似的，有另一句中英對照：Talk of the devil （ 魔鬼） ， 口頭常講Talking/Speaking of the devil，查實跟魔鬼無關。在一個談話場合中，正在或剛剛提起某人，這個人就出現了：Ah, speaking of the devil, here is John. Talking of the devil, there you are.
一般用法，是淨說Speaking/Talking of the devil，在場的人及剛出現的主角，都會一聽就明。中文怎麼說呢？ 「一講曹操，曹操就到。」也即是說，這裏的devil 等於曹操這個古人。
常有年輕人問，網上翻譯好不好用？一般說來，查單字沒問題，但若是組詞或句子，就要小心。網上翻到的一個例子，是「財務處處長」給譯成Finance Everywhere Long！Finance（財務）、Everywhere（處處）、Long（長），非常搞笑。另一例子是網上查閱一宗新聞的資料，事發佐敦，把資料透過電腦英譯中，Jordan成了「香港……約旦」。
也有一些書本的翻譯，把廣東口語寫做太文縐縐的英文。像「甩底」， 成了breakone’s appointment， 譯回中文， 就是「失約」。更對口單位式的口語，是：他甩了我底——He stood me up.不要甩我底——Don’t stand me up.還有「加鹽加醋」， 直譯add salt and vinegar，當然錯。有詞典譯為lay on thicker colours （ 鋪添厚的顏色） 、give an exaggerated report （ 交出誇大報告） ， 都對，但就是不夠原裝廣東話的活潑。要更傳神，可用sex up、juice up ︰ They sex up the story、They juice up the report。
掉過頭來， 「船到橋頭自然直」這句表達樂觀的話，卻有一句非常相似的英文俚語：We will cross the bridge when we come to it， 「抵橋的時候，方再過橋」，有「到時先算」的意思。不過也即是說，包含的樂觀成分沒「船到橋頭自然直」的強；要直截了當用英文說， 不如就簡單地： Don’t worry,things will turn out fine，不用擔心，一切將會安好。
