嘩，拉丁文？不怕！
有同學說，英文已經夠難，還要學英文中的拉丁生字，嘩，好驚呀。但真的不必怕，到頭來不過是vocab，只是這些「奇」字源自拉丁文罷了，且因為串法非一般，反而容易記。
1. Status quo 話說香港50 年不變，維持現狀。現狀就是status quo，名詞。不一定「大單」的情才用，家事私事都得。
Having a new baby is likely to change the domestic status quo. 添了個新生兒，家庭現該有所變。
2. Pro bono 許多人做義工（volunteer），做的就是免費、義務、無償、for public good 的工作，但pro bono 一般多用於專業但不收錢的服務。
That lawyer took the student’s case as pro bono work. 那個律師免費為這學生打官司。
3. Ad hoc 字面意思是"to this"，指不預先計劃、有需要時（ 「殺到」）才做。兩字可撮起，adhoc。
Complaints? We’ll deal with them on an ad hoc basis. 投訴？有就逐宗處理。
Let’s meet up adhoc. 我們（隨時）有需要時會面。
4. Bona fide 真的（genuine）、無欺騙成分的（in good faith）。
He proves to be a bona fide representative of the school. 他真確是那間學校的代表。
以上用語都已是日常英文一部分，頗為普遍；但下面4 個稍為罕見，為免「扮」、「懶高深」的嫌疑，不要隨口用，但最好學會︰
5. Quid pro quo 解this for that，像中文的「禮尚往來」，亦有an equal exchange、公平交換的意思。
I will return your favours quid pro quo. 我會禮尚往來地還你的人情。
6. Prima facie （ 讀fei-shee， 也有讀fah-shee）解at first sight, clear and evident，基本上只是個法律用語，指一宗案情「表面證供成立」︰ That is a prima facie case.
7. Caveat（讀ka-vee-at） 警告，warning。原文是Caveat emptor = Let the buyer beware.「買家小心」。
Before you leap at that property deal, caveat emptor. 你忙不迭同意那宗物業交易前，作為買家要小心！
Thanks for the caveats. 謝謝給我的警示。但日常生活真係較少講caveats， 多說"Thanks for the heads-up"。
8. Veni, vidi, vici （ 讀vichi） = "I came, Isaw, I conquered"， 「我來，我看，我征服」。
這句話源自凱撒大帝，帶很重的歷史戲劇味道，多用作誇張戲言︰The champion （ 冠軍人馬） shouted, "Veni,vidi, vici!"
