好淺的深字
一個字既然話係淺，怎地又會說「深」呢？這種矛盾的話，英文叫oxymoron。譬如說，hot ice，熱的冰，還有cold fire，冷的火；這種用詞，通常是故意提出兩極對立，以更突顯當中吊詭的含意。中文一樣會說：「溫柔的暴烈」、「不經意地刻意」。
話說好淺的深字，BB 都已學會的A for apple、B for boy、C for cat 等等， 夠淺了吧。但英文的蘋果與男童以至貓貓，都另有解釋，如果不識，就淺字也是深字了。
A for apple? He has left for the Big Apple.
他去了…… 「大蘋果」？
Big Apple 是紐約市的暱稱。一個講法，是舊時美國的演藝者都渴望到紐約這個大都會，去碰一碰出頭成名的機會。他們有句老話：There are many apples on the tree, but only one Big Apple. 「樹上有許多蘋果，但只有一個大蘋果」，而大蘋果，就是紐約。
? You are the apple of my eye.
你是我眼中的蘋果。
這是一首老歌的歌名，年紀大一點的或都會聽過。Apple of someone’s eye（留意eye 係單數，不說eyes），是指一個人眼中喜愛的人或物。像：The new car is the apple of his eye. 那輛新車是他的心頭好。
B for boy
? Oh, boy. 純粹口語一句，跟「男孩子」完全無關，視乎情况，是正或反話都得，等於我們的「弊！死啦」或「正！好嘢」。
? He is the golden boy, blue-eyed boy in the office. 他是辦公室裏的「金童」、「藍眼童」。要留意golden 與blue-eyed 之間，有點分別。金童是已做出成績，表現突出的人；而藍眼者，就有「給上頭看好」，帶「受欽點」之意。
C for cat
? Capitalist fat cats are bullies.資本主義肥貓都是「蝦蝦霸霸」者。
? Curiosity kills the cat. 好奇殺死貓兒。譯做我們的口語，也就是「咪八卦！」。
