專業發燒友—Buff
Buff 這個字，或會有人認定是美式英文，但不是呢，大西洋兩岸的人都時時用，是指 one who is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about a subject ， 「一個對一項事物不但熱中，而且甚有認識的人」，亦即「有姿勢有實際」，就像我們口語的「專業發燒友」。例如︰
He’s a wine buff. 他懂得酒。
She’s a cheese buff. 她對芝士很有認識。We are all movie buffs. 我們都是電影「專業發燒友」。
作為一個wine buff， 就要懂得all the wine-buff words，有關喝酒之道的專業用語。像喝紅酒，會用上leathery（質感像皮革的）、oaky（質感似橡樹的）等等。
除了消費範疇，較知識型的「發燒」項目有︰The academic is a Cultural Revolution buff. 這學者專攻文革歷史。
Our guest is a literary buff. Let’s focus on talking Shakespeare. 客人是個文學「迷」，我們就投其所好，談談莎士比亞。
Classical music buffs are keen about digital radio. 古典音樂的專業愛好者都鍾意數碼收音機。
事實是，只要「有解」，buff 前面加什麼字、什麼物事都得︰
A nostalgia buff，一個熟悉懷舊事物的人。A trivia buff，一個「小知識」（譬如狗是否色盲？）專家。
An activist buff， 一個熱中「行動抗爭」的人。
另有得意的buff， 像有人會自稱︰ I am a summer buff! 「我熱愛夏天！」即任何夏日、暑假事宜，他都知得一清二楚。
Buff 等於「專業發燒友」這個用法，許多舊字典都沒有收錄，一般就是介紹buff 形容淺啡色（皮革），源自buffalo（水牛）一字。作動詞用解作「擦亮」（如：buff the floor）。而做名詞，可指人的皮膚，於是便有以下用語：
Strip to the buff —— 脫光
Swim in the buff —— 裸泳
讚一個人，通常指男人，外表夠buff （ You look buff! ），那就跟「發燒友」無關，而是說他膚色金棕、是一個健碩有型士， a goodlooking, macho guy。
