心血來潮做一件事, 英文係do something ON a whim。Whim 的近義詞有fancy、 impulse、urge 等等, 係a sudden desire or change of mind, especially one that is unusual (不尋常的)or unexplained(沒解釋的)。
● I had a sudden whim to go to the carnival.
● He’s dead meat. He bought that expensive car on a whim.
或問,是否規定係ON a whim?
Do one thing ON a whim.
Do repeated things AT whim.
● She hires and fires people at whim.
● He appeared and disappeared at whim.
● You should take control of your life instead of being at the whim of your circumstances.
● He thinks he is the boss and wants me to handle the files according to his whims and fancies.
● It was just his foolish whim and yet he thought it was a splendidly grand idea.
● Please don’t be so judgemental. I was unaware you had such ______ morals.
A. high-and-mighty B. lofty
Lofty 解很高很大很宏偉,a lofty building is a very tall building,但用於理念和道德觀,通常就有disapproving(不以為然)的意思,是批評人遙不可及、「離地」。
● Not many can meet his lofty standards.
● He has a lofty way of talking.
所以要小心, lofty 可以是deserving to be admired(頌揚),也可以是針對一些人自以為是(elevated in status),自覺高人一等的氣燄, describing the insulting attitude of people who think they are better, smarter, or more important than other people。
