憤青與「五毛」
「憤青」是大陸術語，可以直譯angry youth、an angry youth，中英一樣，單數眾數都得。英國近年發生的騷亂，就可叫做UK riots by the angry youth。
當然，若要加上惡意，改說「糞」青，就變成shit youth、the shitty young， 這shit 字，口語或私下可用，但許多西方媒體仍視之為禁忌。
憤青的「青」，一般只要是40 歲以下的人，未到中年，都算youth。英式憤青，有個潮字chavs，解”anti-social teenagers and young adults who are aggressive and arrogant, rowdy and sometimes destructive”， 「反社會的年輕人，態度侵略型兼傲慢，喧嘩且不時具破壞力」。香港有80 後潮流，但有沒有港式憤青，就見仁見智了。
傳統英文另有三個疑似同義詞，均是流氓、無賴，以至暴徒、幫派分子的意思︰Hooligans—多用於足球騷亂，football hooligans，至有football hooliganism（足球搗亂主義）一語。
Ruffians— 1989 年六四一幕，北京官方媒體就曾形容有ruffians（暴徒） 「打、砸、搶、燒」， 英文統稱burning and looting。
Thugs—亦解「打手」，這個字的幫派味道重一些，但要視乎上文下理；像罵一個孩子behaving like a thug，只是說他似個小流氓，不是指他「黑社會」。
上面三個英文字，都用於真實生活，跟虛擬世界的憤青有別。如果想強調「網上」，可加online、net 等字， 變成online hooligans、net thugs。但把中式網上憤青叫做無賴、打手，似乎並不全對，因為中文憤青的定義另外包括：
熱誠的—passionate
愛國的—patriotic
排外的—xenophobic
分別在於另有「五毛」黨，這肯定是有中國特色的互聯網用語了；話說有網民由官方僱用，全職或兼職在網上發表有利政府權貴的話，每一帖五毛錢，不就是網絡打手。若用英文直譯50 cents、half dollar， 以至2quarters，只會令外人摸不着頭腦。
「五毛」最妥貼的英文，該就是online goons、net goons。
Goons 係hired thugs， 「受僱的打手」，帶出「收錢」兼有惡狠狠大隻保鑣的意象。
