攣與直
在英語世界，要強調一個人並非同性戀者，會說他是straight，直。來到了中文社會，就出現了攣與直的講法。
但要小心，英文說的是straight or gay，不要譯做straight or bent。Bent 解扭曲， 但形容一個人bent， 是指此人不正當（crooked）、貪污（corrupt）及收賄（on the take），跟性取向完全無關。不同版本的聖經，有一句話亦把crooked 與bent 同義：
● Consider the work of God : Who can make straight what He has made crooked?
● Consider the work of God, for who is able to straighten what He has bent?
「這是天主的意旨：衪令之彎曲的，凡人不能弄直。」曲直，自然亦涉及人性的光明與陰暗面。
不過，不要因為以上所說，就以為任何有關bent 的話都是負面的。有個形容詞，hell-bent，乍聽更不要因為包括hell，就直覺是壞事。
● We will beat them fair and square. We are hell-bent on winning. 我們會公平公正地打敗他們。我們全心全力要贏。
Hell-bent 解全心全意（wholeheartedly）、悉力以赴至不惜一切（spare no effort or resources）。視乎上文下理，當中帶點recklessness（冒風險）及stubbornness（頑固）。說的可以是日常點滴，也可以是人世大事。
● He found the gathering more than boring and was hell-bent on leaving. 他覺得那個聚會悶得不得了，一心一意要離開。
● She is hell-bent on helping the underprivileged. 她傾力幫助弱勢社群。
● Why is this government hell-bent on destroying the morale of the entire society? 為什麼這個政府「矢志」要打擊整個社會的士氣？
當然，最後一款hell-bent，不可能是好事。或問，上述例子的bent，指人的傾向，但怎麼會說傾向地獄？有英語學家解說道，這個hell， 原來就像What the hell 之類的口語， 純粹是個intensifier，不過用來加重語氣罷了。
既有hell-bent，有沒有heaven-bent？有，但只係玩字，是聖詩歌詠班的名號。但就真有moral bent （ 道德傾向） ， 跟morale being bent（士氣受挫）的講法：
● The moral bent of my heart and conscience is to get right. 我心靈與理智的道德傾向，就是要做對的事。
