曼德拉是面對死刑陳辭
1964 年4 月26 日英國傳媒The Observer 報道曼德拉審判的剪報。
上星期，編輯為免讀者誤會曼德拉被判死刑而非終身監禁，所以將我原稿的「面對死刑」改為「面對終身監禁」，但其實曼德拉在法庭陳辭的時候，他面對的的確是死刑，這是他的團隊最大的恐懼。他的律師團隊已知他無法逃避定罪，問題只是能不能令法庭不判他死刑。他的陳辭一意在還非洲人的自由抗爭一個清白，將自己個人的生死置諸度外。
所以說到最後一句，他為和平、民主、自由、和諧的非洲生死相許，「if it needsbe, it is an ideal for which I am prepared todie」，並非假設，而是直面死亡，所以震撼性大得無以復加。
其實判處死刑差不多是定局。等候裁決期間，曼德拉指示律師，若法庭判他死刑，不要上訴。整個審訊始末，由他的負責統籌辯護律師Joel Joffe The Statevs. Nelson Mandela 詳細記錄。我常想，做律師，當如Joffee。
出乎意料，法庭判處曼德拉等人終身監禁。背後出力營救者之一是當時駐約翰內斯堡的一名副領事。他以外交郵件將曼德拉陳辭急送英國外交部，並讓曼德拉的妻子在領事館花園接受國際傳媒訪問。究竟對事情有多大幫助不得而知，但這個幕後故事，50 多年後才由他的兒子John Minford 在我充當編輯的《A45報》透露出來。
