1995年6月《蘋果日報》創刊社論慷慨激昂﹕「不怕九七後情況有變嗎？我們怕。但我們不願意被恐懼所威嚇。我們更不願意被悲觀所蒙蔽。我們要積極樂觀地面對未來，因為我們是香港人！」

香港人當時的確普遍懷着這種心情迎向九七，半信半疑地將香港付托在中英聯合聲明、基本法、一國兩制、民主回歸，願能保持香港以法治限制公權力，原有制度和人權自由不變，邁向雙普選，樂觀者甚至冀盼九七後中港互動五十年，可促進十幾億人民的人權自由。四分一世紀以來，香港人代代相傳努力不懈，可惜未能實現這份憧憬。

努力的過程中，《蘋果日報》是重要持份者，尤其在廿三條立法、反送中兩件大事的如實報道發揮傳媒的公器力量，並喚醒公民意識。履行天職，如實報道，卻成為今日蒙上的嚴重罪名，莫大諷刺。香港奉行西方自由民主陣營的核心價值，我最不想見到中國共產黨打殘香港，就以為彰顯中國模式的優越，愈是天下圍中，愈是自我感覺良好。

蘋果殞落，香港人痛心、失望，卻萬萬不能一蹶不振。多看歷史，就會有種認知，當專制政權感覺受到第四權的威脅，除之而後快，是歷史的必然，不用驚訝，也不要絕望。台灣作家龍應台一篇文章介紹沙漠玫瑰，不是花，是地衣，像一團無生命的枯草，但只要泡水八天，就會長得濃綠飽滿。把水拿掉，藏起一兩年，再泡水，又復活。
