法政隨筆 – 「強姦」民意
英文電台節目主持人質疑李卓人用上「raping public opinion」的字眼評曾蔭權是否過分激烈。這是受傳譯所累。李卓人原文「強姦民意」並無不妥，假若譯做「violatingpublic opinion」就沒事。英文用詞就是有這點怪異，「Violate」也是「強姦」，但「violate」用法廣闊，違反條約也是violate，侵犯人權也是violate，沒有人會想到「強姦」，但「rape」因為極少作「施暴」之外的其他用途，所以語氣就極為暴力了。「Ravish」也是強行施暴，但用法更偏向軟性，「ravishingly beautiful」的女子，使人情不自禁；濟慈有「Thou still unravishedbride of quietness」，更是詩意盎然。
意義相同，輕重有天淵之別，即時傳譯的準確性關係重大。
「埋沒良心」譯做「bury your conscience」絕對準確，但不如「sweep under the carpet」、「look the other way」深入民心。有時，為了繼續享有利益而不究是否違背良知，未必壞到完全天良盡泯的地步，「把灰塵掃到地氈底下」，仍是心中有數的。再輕一點，可說是「look the other way」，但用語低調，不等於責備不深，有人被施暴而閣下look the otherway，那就真的很大問題了。
說人「可恥」， 語氣極重， 不能譯做「shameful」，因為值得一個人感到羞慚或羞恥之事可大可小，羞愧程度可深可淺。
「What a shame!」只是「可惜」； 「shame onyou!」可以用來說笑。「曾蔭權可恥」那種「可恥」，應當譯做「contemptible」。
有些傳譯缺陷非關語文，而是涉及文化及社會價值變更。有些觀念已逐漸薄弱而變得模糊，如「unseemly」——行為何須違法、犯規、不道德？「不成體統」，有失大方有礙觀瞻已極為不該。現代社會，禮崩樂壞，還有什麼「體統」？「Unseemly」譯對了也沒法理解。
不學詩，無以言；原來傳譯，也是一樣。
譯得不貼切， 「強姦」了誰的意見也不好。
