盛女= prime girl、bachelorette!
電視上有個以「盛女」為題材的節目，號稱是個真人騷、reality show； 英文名稱是BrideWannabes。Bride 是新娘， wannabe 亦是個名詞，由want-to-be 演繹過來，後面加s，代表眾數，直譯是「一群想做新娘的人」，日常口語，大概就是「一班恨嫁的女子」。
有批評道，這個節目很「毒」，因為內容充滿扭曲的價值觀（distorted values），所以會荼毒思想（mind-poisoning） ， 賣的都是男女偏見、sexbias、性別歧視（gender discrimination）。但也有人說，都不過娛樂節目啫—— It’s just showbiz（show business 的簡稱），表達自由，不喜歡可以選擇不看。自由主義的底線，是有選擇就有自由：
Where there is choice, there is freedom.也即是說，孰好孰壞，講到底見仁見智：It alldepends on who is talking，視乎誰在講話。
「盛女」是「剩女」的委婉詞（euphemism）。原本一個「剩」字，令人聯想「揀剩蔗」以至冷飯菜汁， 直譯英文就是leftovers，確實有點侮辱；改做「盛」，果是妙筆，好生盛世、豐盛等正面的意境。盛女，或就叫prime girls。
This is the prime of her life. 這是她的黃金時期、巔峰日子。
這個prime 是名詞， 代表state of the highestperfection、the best part。例句：He is past his prime. 他的大好時光已經過去。事實是，由文字引伸出的兩性文化歧視，中英一樣。同樣未婚而被視為「過期」的男女，男的叫bachelor， 好端端的， 感覺中立至正面， 且有”diamond bachelor” （ 「鑽石王老五」）之說。但女的叫”spinster”，甚至”old maid”（老姑婆），感覺就是pejorative、貶抑、輕蔑， 字面意思（connotations） 帶prissiness （ 謹小慎微） 、fussiness（嘮叨過敏），更有unwanted goods（ 「剩餘」物資）的含意。
於是，現代西方人已很少用spinster 一字，遑論old maid。有一段時間，也曾出現bachelor girl 這個叫法。但近年在美國新一代的稱謂， 是bachelorette！
話說美國電視在千禧年代初，有個擇偶遊戲真人騷，叫The Bachelor，節目頗受歡迎，電視台加碼添食，以女為主，就叫The Bachelorette。
今日，大多數人為示兩性公平，亦為避開令人不快、指人超齡未婚的名詞，多數用形容詞來代替：
She is single. 她單身。
He is unattached. 他沒有附屬關係。
She is eligible. 她「合資格」。
He is available. 他「可用」。
They are “free”. 他們都是自由身。
