蘋果樹下：「曲終人散」 的英文
總覺得，中文是一套詩畫的文字，也因為象形的視覺衝擊，當中的優雅以至幽怨，像說「捨不得」，實不足為外人道。饒是這樣，一些四字詞語，像「曲終人散」，要譯做英文，倒也有類似帶點憂傷的講法：The curtain falls、As the curtain fell，指落幕了，有老大一個舞台的帳幕掛了下來，或逐漸合攏的意境。表演完畢，散場。
網上有好些跟足字面的直譯，諸如The play came to an end and the audience dispersed，就是沒意思，外人霎時不會知道你在嘰咕些甚麼。另有一句：The end of a happy occasion，仍然不妥，誰說「曲終」之前的曲，事必happy？
更嚇人的，是有人煞有介事地在網上教不知所云的英文：
“Diverge from each other with ending musical echoes around ears”！嗄？且附中文解釋「各自散了，音樂縈繞耳際」云。
老老實實，網上的句子翻譯，以至自稱甚麼網上中英字典，往往信不過。查單字是可以的，但兩個字的fall guy（替死鬼）會給譯做「秋天人」！切勿中招。最近遇上的另一例子，是「站在一米綫外」之米綫，網上話即係rice noodle。
回說曲終人散，真要直譯，比較妥當的可以是 The show’s over and the spectators are gone，直接說「表演完畢，觀眾散去」。當然，視乎在說的話題，曲終人散在中文亦有不同的意思。
最尋常的解讀，是指人、事或物終了散了，純粹完了：It’s the final curtain. It’s the end, It’s end of show。再白話粗糙一點，不也就是說It’s game over. Finished. All gone.
若這番完結，主要是表達一份捨不得，可考慮掉過頭來嘆一句：All things do come to an end。凡事都有個終結，亦即有「天下無不散之筵席」的味道；All（good） things must come to an end。
如果是說「等它曲終人散，我們才做甚麼甚麼」，這就等於「塵埃落定」：Wait till the dust settles。若覺得這句文藝過龍，可考慮改說Wait till things quiet down。
吟沉一句「這麼快就曲終人散」，主題是離愁別緒：It is always hard（or sad） to say goodbye。
曲終人散，各散東西，各奔前程：As the curtain fell, we went our separate ways。
英國新聞，有過這麼一條舊標題：
Last night, the curtain came down on14 years of Tory rule.昨晚，保守黨14年的統治落幕。
政治，一樣是表演。英文的落幕，跟我們的曲終人散，異曲同工。
