蘋果樹下：學（好）英文這回事
最近在一個以學生為主的音樂會，有一組中一的同學表演rap，歌詞中大聲清楚來一句：……英文科，就最難頂！
英文科難頂，都因為生吞活剝以學文法、考文法為依歸；要計分的呢，不日考大學。於是就連報上教英文的專欄文字，也見推波助瀾。一次一瞄標題，老大嚇一跳：「及物與不及物動詞」。甚麼傢伙？英文係transitive and intransitive verbs，對不起我中、英文都不懂。慶幸我的一代老師沒教過，因為少年的我學了，肯定只會亂腦。像很淺的一句：I read a newspaper，「我讀一份報紙」，夠簡單吧，但這句話經過文法「剖析」，當中read因為「及」了a newspaper這「物」，之謂「及物動詞」，等等。
嘆十聲。明明識得I read a newspaper，然後融會貫通，會加料成：I read John a newspaper、I read John and Mary a newspaper就好，但若當中事必要學甚麼「間接受詞」、甚麼”tri-transitive verb”等文法詞彙，且要就此測驗考試，要學生記得頭昏腦脹，這樣學英文，豈止謀殺學好語文的興趣，根本就是「趕客」。而興趣，是所有學習最原始的動力。
學外語，當然不可不理文法，但實在不必教得似在訓練語言專家，彷彿學生將來都要參與編輯字典。語文貴乎溝通，要求句句一板一眼文法一絲不苟……，怪不得連大學生都怕講英文。因為聽、講、讀、寫，就是講最即興，沒有時間上的緩衝來斟酌文法，就是怕出錯。
請所有英文老師一起救救孩子，教英文不以文法大過天，要重生活溝通及文學領會。自然也有人說，教與學英文最緊要是應付公開試，拿好成績提升校譽。就是了，本地有剛過去的公開試，就以充斥深字的試卷來考中學生，鞏固傳統中「多用英文深字以示程度高、學問好」的錯誤觀念。我教英文新聞寫作，常提醒大學生，大眾傳播積極避用深字，卻見上述的公開試中，有incongruity、admonitory、apocalypse、hedonism、equivocate等字。老老實實，上面五個英文字有幾多個成年人全部一見就識？而這些字卻拿來去考少年人！這種考試，只會增加年輕一代學英文的挫敗感。
即使學會了一腦子好厲害的英文字又如何？真與外國人溝通，新時代來句閒談：”Don’t stand me up”、”What’s your take on this?”、”We’ll go along to get along”……年輕人即使學了足足二十年英文，乍聽仍會瞠目結舌。個個字都識，但甚麼意思嘛？
不忿氣，去問出身劍橋的英國記者：甚麼叫transitive verb？對方搔搔頭，答：Don’t know!
