語文 – 唔通、好彩、不如英文怎麼講？
常到中學去跟少年人談生活英語、「好玩」英語，既然聲稱好玩，也就有學生發問﹕「『佢閃』，英文怎麼講？」是He’s split。Split原解分化（陣營）、分攤（利益），以至分手﹕He’s split from his girlfriend。解作廣東話的「閃」，主要是美國俚語。要說「我得先走了」，是I’d need to get going，更口語一點，是I’d need to split。
也有學生問﹕「『茄喱啡』英文是什麼？」是extra（額外、多餘）。導演會說﹕We’d need a number of extras for this set.「這場戲需要好些臨時演員。」有一個講法，是「茄喱啡」音譯自carefree，但英文卻不見得有這個意思。在荷李活，都說extras。
周前讀《明報》「書面語怎樣寫」一欄，見作者蘇真真的例句，非常貼近生活腔調，像口語「翳焗」，下筆寫「悶熱」。英文一樣有類似分別。翳焗——muggy，悶熱——hot and humid：「今日行街好似特別翳焗咁，唔通就打風？」（It seems to be particularly muggy walking in the street today, could it mean a typhoon’s on the way?）「唔通」，could it mean，是原文「或者」的意思，亦可改用perhaps。若「唔通」是指「難道」，像「唔通我唔睬佢咩？」英文可說﹕「It’s difficult for me to ignore him.」或「I can’t just ignore him. 」 。
「唔通唔XX」，是雙重否定，近年英語世界有一樣的口語﹕I can’t not respond to him.
Can’t not等於cannot not，不合文法，但確有這樣的口頭話。另一例句﹕「So you didn’t not call me?」（你沒有不給我電話？）「行行街突然落狗屎，好彩有帶遮！」（Was out there when it suddenly bucketed down, good job that I had an umbrella with me.）落狗屎——bucket down（水桶倒水）。或有人會想起形容大雨的raining cats and dogs，但這句話給視為「古」語，已屬老套。
滂沱大雨——absolutely pour. It suddenly absolutely poured.
好彩——good job that… 是比較口語、自在的講法，比用lucky、fortunate自然。當然，說thank god就更通俗了。
「個日頭咁猛，我不如去食支雪條消消暑啦！」（The sun’s so impossible, let’s go get an ice lolly to cool down.）個日頭咁猛——當然可直譯the sun is so very hot，這裏改為the sun is so impossible（不可能），就有中文的「頂唔順」、吃不消之意。She’s so impossible = 我受不了她。
不如——let’s。原話中的「不如」，是個建議。若是個選擇，像「外面下這麼大的雨，不如就留在家，不出去了」，這個「不如」，是might as well，有「索性」、橫豎的意思：It’s raining so hard, we might as well just stay home.
看，廣東話的「唔通」、「好彩」、「不如」，一樣可以用英文自在道來。要掌握得好，沒有秘訣，仍然是有興趣、多用心就是。
