語文 – Baby boomers的英文潮語
由a bigoted woman講起英國首相白高敦自以為私下罵了女街坊選民一句a bigoted woman，卻給直播出了街，該就構成了政治自殺。那三個英文字，由香港媒體翻譯，也真見五花八門。個人不接受「老虔婆」，因為未忠於原文，似無故加添了惡意。有譯作「心胸思想狹窄」，但那是narrow-minded了。另一譯法，是「食古不化」，卻又好像少了點偏頗、狹隘的味道。也許，真要譯成本地俚語，可說「那個『唔化』的女人」。
Bigoted，比biased（偏見）重一些，一般用於sex（性）、race（種族）、religion（宗教）方面。英領導人與街頭女子的對話，提及移民，那女的說「But all these eastern Europeans what（sic）are coming in——where are they flocking from?」（「這些東歐的『東西』一直進來——他們從什麼地方湧進來？」）話中的what，應該是who。而sic，是「原話如此」的意思。也不知當事人是無心抑有意說錯，聽上去，就像個擁抱保護主義，不喜移民的人，是個protectionist（保護主義者）。
白高敦起碼沒叫她racist（種族歧視者）。Bigoted的中文書面語，應是「偏執」，「一個偏執的女人」。英國人的一般感覺，並非bigoted這字出了問題，更非應叫那女子做lady而不是woman，而是政治人的假﹕「Politicians will say anything to your face to get your vote，despite their true feelings.」（「政治人為了要得你的一票，會當你面就一切誇誇其談——他們的真想法，是另一回事。」）。一詞以蔽之，就是「虛偽」。He was caught a hypocrite。「這偽君子給抓。」政治人，尤其是首相級的人馬，原該知道即使是私人談話，亦會隨時給人引述，務必要講究用字遣詞的分寸，事發之際，他顯然亂了陣腳。即使私下批評，他原可避開bigoted這類重頭字眼，說That woman has gone over the top。Over the top，指過了火位、好「誇」。
英文有一個舊「潮」語，camp，原也有類似意思。His gesture was sheer camp。「他的舉措，浮誇造作。」《牛津大字典》的camp字解釋，順序是ostentatious（炫耀的）、exaggerated（誇張的）、affected（造作的）、theatrical（戲劇的）、effeminate（女性的），最後才說homosexual（同性戀的）。卻也是最後一個解說給發揚光大。
亦即是在香港曾經一度流行的，說人「camp camp」一語，幾乎就是等如說人gay。因為字帶批判，腔調bigoted，不管是英文的camp，或粵語的camp camp，都已給掃進語文歷史的角落了。
