迷宮，maze 與amaze
許多人都知道Amazing Grace 《奇異恩典》的音樂及英文歌詞吧。Amazing、amaze，有理由相信，amaze 與maze（迷宮）有點歷史關連，兩字都有令人迷惘的元素。
I am in such a maze that I cannot speak. 我迷惘得說不出話來。
Maze 的用法，除了形容精神狀態，亦可套諸任何錯綜複雜的關係、情况、安排或配置：
? The application procedures are like amaze. 申請手續複雜得有如迷宮。
? We have to check a maze of regulations.我們要審視一堆錯綜複雜的條文。
香港的「劏房」情况， 英文叫sub-divided units，是把一個單位間隔成許多「獨立」的出租空間，裏頭九曲十三彎，恍如迷宮︰
? The sub-divided flat contains a maze ofrooms and corridors. 那個劏房單位裏頭是個房間與走廊交錯的迷宮。
Maze 往往與labyrinth 相通，都是迷宮，那麼知道簡單許多的maze 就算？其實，labyrinth 這個字看上去深奧，卻是英語世界一個頗常用的字，因此一樣要學。? The shopping mall was designed like alabyrinth and I got horribly lost in there. 那個商場設計似個迷宮，我在裏頭完全迷了路。
那到底maze 與labyrinth 有沒有分別？有一點。一個講法是labyrinth 是一條兜兜轉轉的路，但maze 就更厲害，沿路更有分岔支路。
中式迷宮，多與八卦陣有關，現代國際傳媒說的中國迷宮，the China labyrinth、the Chinese labyrinth，就多與政治、法治等沾邊，包括權力鬥爭、宮廷人事。? The dissident has landed in China’slegal labyrinth. 這異見分子陷入中國的法律迷宮。
? China has a vast labyrinth of onlinesurveillance that depends on awell-organised Internet police force. 中國有一龐大迷宮似的網絡監察系統，靠的是組織嚴謹的互聯網警隊。
