通識人物 – 禮貌對答
中國和英國文化同樣重視禮儀，但在語文表達方面各有不同。中文主要是以不同的稱呼來表達禮貌，但英文在一般對話中喜歡透過偏離正常時間性的動詞，來表達虛心及禮貌的對答；例如：「Would you like an orange juice?」留意動詞是過去式的「would」，而非普通未來式的「will」，這是顯示對被問者的禮貌；答案應該是：「Yes, please.」或者「Yes, I would.」後者的答案亦以第三者過去式的動詞來代表這是一個禮貌的回應。當然，用普通未來式來提出問題亦可以很禮貌，例如：「Will you please pass me the pepper?」答案：「Yes, of course.」由此可見，禮貌對答不一定需要偏離一般文法才可達到目的，這與前幾節談的有少許分別。
另一種比較少見的表達方式是以第三者的對話形式與對方對答。這是表示對方地位尊貴，在禮儀上因為雙方身分懸殊，所以不應互相直接對話。例如假若對方是貴族或法官的話，會把：「Would you like some tea?」說成：「Would his Lordship like some tea?」當然，這種用法現在已過時，只有在法庭最常使用。
最後，必須多謝《明報》給我機會在這裏談談一些日常英文使用法，希望同學從這幾節主題，看到一些一般英文比較獨特的常用文法，從而引起對英文文法的興趣。
