通通識 – Government FOR the people 陳淑莊

過去兩期和讀者淺談介詞of 和by 的用法，這次和大家談談for這個preposition。For 最常見的用法是表達目的：

民建聯的名字用上「Democratic Alliance FOR the Bettermentof Hong Kong」，稱是為香港的進步而成立，縱然他們經常前後矛盾，在競選時說支持07/08 普選然後又說不能「操之過急」，說支持公平競爭法，然後又在投票時齊齊反對，這導致有市民在網上差不多「成功爭取」Facebook 召集「100,000 個厭惡民建聯的人」。至於究竟他們是bettered（改進）了或是battered（重創，法律上解毆打）了香港人的福祉，則有待讀者定斷。

美國前總統林肯（Abraham Lincoln） 在蓋堤斯堡演說（Gettysburg Address）中所說的Government for the people 就是為人民服務的政府，或所謂民享政府。但要注意，如果說服務人群，不能說serve for the people，只能是serve the people，但是說work for the people 則為正確用法，有相近意思。

For 也有表示原因的意思，不過較because 多幾分情感的意味。Thank you for your participation in the de facto referendum，我感激每一名參與變相公投的朋友， for without yourcontribution, we can do nothing，因為如果沒有你們的貢獻和付出，便不能成事。除此以外，for 也有目的地的意思：This planeis for Hong Kong，這飛機飛往香港。Our movement is for real democracy，我們的「公投」運動以真民主為歸宿。民主運動走到今天，我們經歷過起與跌，這次的「公投」史無前例，這是來真的，This is for real. And that Government of the people, by thepeople, for the people, shall not perish from theEarth。
