邱吉爾的訣別書
美好的思念之情固然需要靠情書維繫，患難之時其實也一樣，特別是到了天人永隔的一瞬。當今的香港人沒幾個經歷過戰爭，更沒可能經歷戰爭帶來的生離死別。但在戰爭的年代，前線的軍人為自己的情人準備訣別書，以備自己遭遇不測後由軍方代為寄出，是多麼的平常。
強人如邱吉爾，也曾擔心過自己因戰爭而沒命回家。時值剛好百年前的第一次世界大戰，當時任內閣首席海軍大臣的邱吉爾，與其他軍人一樣，也寫下一封訣別書，以備不測後寄回給其妻。但有別於其他同僚的長篇大論，這位未來的英國首相兼諾貝爾文學獎得主，在1915年以不足一百字與妻子話別：
“Do not grieve for me too much. I am a spirit confident of my rights. Death is only an incident & not the most important which happens to us in this state of being. On the whole, especially since I met you my darling I have been happy, & you have taught me how noble a woman’s heart can be. If there is anywhere else I shall be on the lookout for you.
