這No. 1 係reference to oneself,跟人家說take care of number one,即叫人put his own interests first, 先照顧、「睇住」自己, 範圍包括welfare, happiness and success 福祉、健康及邁向成功之道。
● That team member of ours only thinks about number one and never about anybody else.
The kid needs to go number one.
One 這個字因為簡單,使用時或會不以為意,但日常許多表達方式,都要用上:★ One of these days,不日、就快、「睇下幾時」, 等於soon、before long、someday 。例:● One of these days I’m going to tell him to get lost.
★ One of THOSE days,指那種不快的、有點禍不單行的日子, a bad day where many things go wrong。例:● I first lost my wallet, then forgot about an appointment, then it rained and I couldn’t get a taxi. It was one of those days.
★ One of those things,有點像我們的「人生不如意事十常八九」的味道,something is unfortunate but it must be accepted。例:
● My aunt’s sudden illness is one of those things and there is nothing we can do about it.
★ One thing leads to another,事情接踵而來,(也不必詳述)就這樣發生了,one event sets things up for another event, and so on。例:● One thing led to another and suddenly it was too late to catch the bus home.
How did they manage to lose their right?
