隨口俚語
總有人以為學英文是很「大陣仗」的事宜，不但用字要華麗堂皇，文法也必須一絲不苟。卻是，由這個心態造就出來的談吐與行文，容易流於可笑，因為感覺會像有人以句句之乎者也與你說話。
就是忘了語言的大前提，是生活溝通，會得隨口噏：
You did that without my say-so.
口語的say-so，就代替了比較「巴閉」的consent、authorisation等同義字。
而去到發音，亦往往可以偷一點懶，諸如：
It is okay，不要自以為大聲清楚講eet ees okay，這反而是錯的，日常可縮做S’okay。也有madam 女士， 英語社會查實多講ma’am。另有How is it going，口講變成Howzitgoin’。
於是，在平日交談中，聽到一句Oh so awful 太糟了，當然沒有問題，但若是Oh so last year 「非常的去年」，是否錯英文？不是，不過是隨口的俗話。另例：
He was a White House bodyguard two presidents ago. 他是兩任總統前的一個白宮保鑣。
She told me her story after two coffees. 兩杯咖啡後，她跟我說她的故事。
這個講法，類似中文的「燒兩炷香的時間」。
亦一提3 個淺白的字：person、thing、affair，都係生活英語常用字。
Person：以人做主角，a xxx person，形容個人取捨。
A kiddy party? Afraid I’m not a kid person. 孩童派對？恐怕我不擅長跟小孩打交道。
Kid person 不能直譯，同時留意這人不是不喜歡兒童，只是不太熱中跟孩子混在一起。另例：
He said he’s not a dog person. 他說他並不特別喜歡狗。
不特別喜歡，不等於不喜歡或憎恨。要注意當中的分別。
餘此類推，改用貓做主角：
This is a people cat. And she’s also a cat cat. 這隻貓喜歡人，也喜歡其他的貓。
Thing：由事或物出發，not my thing，即not my cup of tea，不是我的一杯茶。
A kiddy party? ‘Fraid（＝Afraid）not my thing. 兒童派對？不是我所好。
Gardening is not his thing. 園藝不是他的喜好。
講not my KIND╱TYPE of thing 都得。
Karaoke is not my kind of thing. But please you all go ahead without me. 對唱K 我興趣麻麻。但別理我，你們去吧。
Affair：可用於事件、地方或物品，a xxx affair，總之係形容「一單」。
That match was a sorry affair. 那場比賽簡直令人神傷。
That restaurant is a noisy, not-particularly-warm affair. 那間餐廳嘈吵，並不特別令人覺得賓至如歸。
The gate was a battered, saggy affair. 那道閘損壞不堪，搖搖欲墜。
